I'm looking for a good Chinese restaurant in or around the Waukegan area. Any ideas?! I've been to King's Buffet on Grand Ave and I didn't like it. I have also been to Mig Toy....didn't like it either.

    Hi,

Have you been to the new Chinese restaurant on 41 and Delany Road?

unless i'm mistaken, that would be Yao Yaos, which moved from their location on Grand. Haven't been there since the move so can't comment on quality.

    Hi,

What was your impression of Yao Yao's before the move?

This location was once The Normandy, which a friend's favorite location to celebrate her birthday. Most recently Café Oceana, which I visited once and didn't particularly like. What interests me is how much money is spent to change the exterior each time.

The restaurant Yao-Yaos isn't there anymore. What's the name of the restaurant on 41 and delany? I just want a place with good szechuan beef.
Any one been to China Garden in downtown Waukegan?

    HI,

The place on 41 and Delany is a new, at least to the location, Chinese restaurant whose name I just verified by phone as Yao Yao's. I don't know Yao Yao's at all and wondered what it was like at least at the original location.

I have never been to China Garden, isn't it the musty looking place with the old neon? The last time I did jury duty up there, it was one of the few places to go to. I just couldn't gather up the nerve to walk in, though today I might walk in to at least check out the menu. I will walk out if the menu doesn't suit. Who knows may it is a shrine to Americanized Chinese, which has its charms, with great egg rolls and duck almond dim. If you go, then please let us know!

Unfortunately the population on this board for Waukegan area is rather thin. Of course we would love for you to report on what you do know because eventually someone (me!) will check it out.

BTW - I do have an e-mail out to my friend who lives in Waukegan. I'll report back on her comments.

    Best regards,
    Cathy2

    My friend chimed in:

My husband and I tried Yao Yao once for sushi. Not that impressed. perhaps their Chinese is better. Our picks are Ming Toy which is humble digs, but great Chinese very reasonably priced. China Garden on Genesee is good also, although very small - good for carryout. Also on Genesee street near Bacci's is Kong's and we go there often. Haven't tried their sushi, but everything else we've tried is very good and also pretty reasonable.

There's a take-out Chinese restaurant on Belvedere or Washington Street that has been in business for over 50 yrs that my Dad used to like a lot. Not sure of the name (dragon is in it I think). and they always have a neon Chop Suey sign in the window. I've never tried it, but my husband says it's good. Not aware of others, but there may be some I just don't know about.
