I'm going to San Diego to visit some friends on February 23rd.. I'm trying to find a good place to go out and get some even better food. I'm not really picky about cuisine (although I really want to try the sushi) so I'm pretty much open to whatever. We're all 23, just finishing/out of college and adjusting to the real world, so this meal would be borderline splurge, and I want to come up with a place that has a good atmosphere as far as good food/drinks/etc.

Anyone have any reccomendations?? Thanks! :)

Search "San Diego" and go with reasonable expectations. I'm much older than 23 and still find SD to be deadly boring. Go to TJ.

One of several threads on the subject:

This place, while not expensive, is certainly a fun night out in San Diego.

    A few I like include:

Fidel's in Solana Beach: Outstanding Mexican food, good drinks, really funky atmosphere

Las Olas, Cardiff: Good Mexican food, good drinks, and it turns into a bustling beach bar at night

Hodad's, Ocean Beach: Not fine dining by any means, but one of the best burger joints in the entire country, IMO

As far as more upscale, expensive places, I really don't know. I go to San Diego a lot, but find the low- and mid-range places to be good enough for me...definitely do a search on this site (or other forums) to find higher-end places in SD...

I would agree it's a fun place, but if you are the type who will get at all agitated when white belt wearing quasi-hipsters drip A-1 sauce (and worse) all over your steak (yes, while it's on the grill), probably you should take a pass. Or just go for the martinis.

I dunno, I thought the Turf Club crowd was a nice change from the sandaled surfer crowd of San Diego. I don't know why but every time I am in San Diego I feel like I am at a Phish show...

BTW: Quick edit to add the joke I just remembered:

Why did the hipster drop out of Karate?

For sushi, the unfortunately named Sushi Deli is (or was two years ago) quite popular with the younger set. There is a one and a "too", and I believe the one I went to is "too" (:?:), formerly downtown and now located in Hillcrest. I remember quite fresh fish and some interesting menu items (plus, a lot of vegetarian options).

    Sushi Deli
    828 Broadway

Edited to add: My brother just informed me that one of the above is now closed--though I couldn't glean which ("one, no two, no, I don't know, dude"). So, a call first is recommended.

I am from San Diego and have spent a rediculous amount of time there-

Two places I'd hit- Sushi Ota for sushi. It ain't much for atmosphere, but the quality of the food will far and away make up for it. You really really want to sit at the sushi bar.

The Cottage in La Jolla for breakfast- oh man is this place great, and affordable too!
is making all his reservations under the name Steve Plotnicki from now on.
