I’ve long been a fan of the original Bombon bakery on 18th Street, and I’ve had some enjoyable snacks at the Bombon Café on Ashland and Monroe. But until a couple weeks ago I hadn’t been to the third outpost, Bombon Americano, on Clark Street two blocks south of Division.
Unlike the Mexican offerings at the bakery and café, Bombon Americano does traditional American bakery items. It’s a very cute place:
I had a latte and a couple pastries while Antonius was working with early music specialists at the Newberry. I really enjoyed a slice of lemon poppyseed pound cake topped with apricot glaze. I was less enthusiastic about the blueberry scone I had: I like scones which are dense and buttery and where the fruit (if any) is in discrete chunks. This scone was in a different style, the berries chopped up finely and mixed all through the dough, which was more muffin-like in its crumb. Just not my idea of a scone, I guess.
They also have sandwiches and breakfast sandwiches. There are only a few tables and in this weather please note that there is only a single door (no room for a second) so it’s a bit chilly in the café right now.
I will definitely keep this spot in mind next time I/we are at the Newberry … or getting our car worked on up the street.
