I grew in Michigan where Ring Bologna was plentiful and a staple of my childhood. Every so often, I get the occasional craving for Bologna and cheddar cheese on crackers. This doesn't work so well with the sandwich slices, and I can't seem to find Ring Bologna anywhere. I haven't looked super hard, but it is not at any of the stores I frequent.

I stocked up on the last trip home, but I'd like to have a local source.

Does anybody know what I'm talking about??

This stuff seems pretty common in the area where my current project is located. (Rural Western Wisconsin.)

I'd never seen it before I started working up here. Apparently one of the "local" (local being 20 miles or more from here) butchers ("Westby Locker and Meats") is renown for their ring bologna. So renown that the recipe was sold seperately from the business when it changed hands.

I wasn't even that impressed by the stuff, but it's apparently popular with the locals.

I've also seen it in Wisconsin at European Homemade Sausagein Milwaukee.

Also, ring balogna is popular in a lot of the Amish areas.

Are you talking about pickled ring bologna, ala Koegel's? If so, I've never seen it here. But I have seen plain old ring bologna around, maybe at Paulina, as noted above. If you need pickled, Koegel's web site claims they ship, though my mother in law has had no luck getting any to Massachusetts, resulting in many expensive trips to the UPS Store every time I'm in Saginaw visiting the folks. I'm an enabler, I guess.

I've seen Usingers Ring Balogna (baloney) at Treasure Island. I've actually bought it from the one in Wilmette. They have a pretty good selection of Usingers stuff, including Yachtwurst (with pistachio nuts) that is one of my favorite guilty pleasures.

Thanks everyone. I am talking about the non-pickled variety, as that is what I had growing up. I will have to visit Paulina Market and Treasure Island, as well as ask my sister to scope out Milwaukee markets for me.

Why feel guilty? The yachtwurst is very tasty.
As they used to say in the '60s, "If it feels good, eat it".

    Well, maybe I'm misquoting slightly.

Anyway, I'm a Usinger's fan, and it seems that local groceries pick and choose the parts of the product line they carry in an apparently random way. Their website has a where to buy form that results in an email telling you where you can buy a particular product in your area [assuming that it IS sold nearby].

just picked up a ring bologna at the kenosha, wi woodmans'.

funny i've never heard of 'ring bologna' before reading of it on this board. i'm up in kenosha at least twice a month and always stop off at woodmans before coming back home to chicago. i must have passed over it dozens of times while perusing their sausage cooler, without taking notice.

during my last visit, they were frying it up at a sample stand and i had a few pieces... delicious, had to buy one to take home.
