Has anybody been to the greek place (name is slipping my mind) on Lake Cook across from Home Depot in Deerfield?

I heard that they have resonable lunch specials and the food is pretty good.

I forgot the name of it too. It is on the tip of my tongue. It is a chain, but the food is good and the portions are big. They do have a lunch special. You can have them fax you a lunch special menu...I don't know where I placed mine.

Oh they opened up Zippy's again in the Home Depot parking lot.

The greek restaurant across from Home Depot is called Demetri's. I organized a lunch outing for my department about a year or so ago. It was pretty good. That and its neighbor, Eggshell Cafe, shares space that once held Shaw's Blue Crab house and Ed Debevics.

Demitris has some of the worst greek food ive eaten in my opinon..Periyali's on Milwaukee going toward Green is much better

I work down at Sanders/Willow, and there's a great taqueria in the Palwaukee Plaza behind the Palatine Express along Milwaukee Ave called Monica's. Their food hasn't disappointed me, and their homemade chips and salsa is always a treat.

There is also a short order grill on the far southwest corner of the mall called The Dog Walk, that gets pretty busy at lunch time, but the couple that run it are about as efficient as I've ever seen. I go there maybe twice a month, and the guy remembers how I like my burger.

Also, yesterday I tried Chicago's Best on the SW corner of Dundee/Pfingsten. I tried their daily special of Homemade Lasagna w/Sausage for 5.50 and I was knocked out! IT was enough for two big people, and it was cooked to perfection. The big con is that there are 4 restaurants in that tiny strip mall and nowhere near enough parking.

I work at sanders and willow as well..you say the Dog Walk is in the same mall as Monicas?

Dog Walk is on the south side of the same building as Monica's and Irv's, all the way in the corner.

well checked out Dog Walk..was not too impressed..maybe i should not have gone for the combo..it was very bland..looks like it makes a good business though...

I just started a new job this week at Dundee and Landwehr, so this is all great information. My round trip to Pita Inn today was 30 minutes- 10 minutes each way and 10 minutes in the place. Still had 30 mins to eat, so it worked out nicely. Some people at work recommended Elegance in Meats- I'll have to try them soon. Someone here said Taqueria Al Pastor wasn't good- on the way to Pita Inn, I saw another taqueria right around the corner from there, I think called Taqueria Alamo- has anyone tried that? What about those 2 places north of Pita Inn (I think it was a pancake place and a hot dog place)?

I have yet to try Monica's. We should all get together an make it out here for lunch one day...anybody?

Post your get together on the Events board, then wait and see who pops up! I live in Highland Park, except generally Thursdays, I could be tempted to go over to Northbrook. Give a weeks warning because you also have to hope people peek over there!

Do I just go at the wrong times? I went to Monica’s for lunch today and ordered 3 tacos...carne asada, al pastor, and chicken to keep it varied. When we first sat down they brought chips over, they were homemade and the salsa was delish. So, I was thinking if this is a sign of things to come it can’t be that bad. Well, I was wrong. When I got my tacos the carne asada and chicken was dry and flavorless...well, it had the taste of frozen meat cooked. Then the al pastor was dry and seemed like it was sitting there for awhile. Then on the carne asada and chicken they put lettuce, tomato and chesse on there instead of the regular onion and cilantro. The worst thing was the lime that was on my plate was used. It had already been squeezed. I didn’t say anything since a couple of coworkers I dragged them with. They all agreed it wasn’t good and I hate to say it...baja fresh and chipotle seems like the places I will dine at when I want some Mexican.

I'm sorry you had that experience -- I've never been disappointed by Monica's, and never a problem with the food quality.

I was there Wednesday night and it was terrific as usual. We had two tortas (milanesa and cecina) and a burrito dinner (chorizo). All were top-notch.

This an understatement. The lunches at this place are fantastic and a bargain! All the police and firemen are hip to this place. Some of the items they have are lamb shanks, steak diane, lake perch, strip steak with blue cheese, london broil, grilled flank steak, chicken vesuvio, ribs and chicken, mixed grill of sausage and lamb chop . Even the chicken fingers are 4 giant pieces of chicken. And two side dishes with roll and butter. Typical prices are 5.98 up to 6.98 for a huge lunch!

That's funny, because Ira's alienated me by charging extra for every little thing, including peppers, onions, red sauce, ...etc.

If you want a great sub or other sandwiches, check out Tony's Subs in Deerfield on Waukegan road about a mile north of Deerfield pkwy. Get a launcher!

Hit the Elegance in Meats joint today. Damn good! Once again, the LTHers
totally came through. This place was well worth the $. Not that it's expensive by any stretch. Lunch was 6.00 and change, but it was actually a bargain. I could see getting that same big hunk of veal parm at a sit down joint for 15.00. It wasn't the best ever, but I've had far worse for far more $ Decent looking salad bar too. This place is definitely in my rotation now.

I've never tried the prepared foods at E&M. It's nice to hear that the preapred foods match the high quality of their butcher shop, which is one of my main go to places. We had hot dogs from there at the LTH picnic, and they feature the best quality skirt steaks that I have found in Chicago as well as a fairly large selection of prime beef.

Have you ever been there on a weekday at lunch time? Their prepared food is not the same as the lunches. A lot of their prepared food, butcher meats, deli, and bakery is top notch quality, but seems overpriced (20 mini quiche for $20.) I think the hot lunches are terrific and they sell them as a loss leader, just to get people in the store. It's working great because this place is mobbed around all holidays.

I'm only plugging this place because I'm tired of losing great eating places. I should start a thread about all the places that have closed in their prime. Although that's like crying after spilt milk.

I just got back from Monica's for the 2nd time. It was better than the first, and I thought they did pretty good work the 1st time. Give it another shot.
Asada was fresh both times I went. Monica's is nowhere close to the best stuff I've ever had like Las Asada's, or La Pasadita, but I can't imagine anyone saying chipotle or baja fresh is better than the stuff I've had both times at Monica's. Today I went at about 11:30, and the orders were flowing. Maybe you went early and had stuff from the day before? I don't know - around here, I've tried the
Taqueria Pastor on Dundee (HORRIBLE!!!!!)

Jimenez - Can only order the platillo for 7.25 if you want to ensure fresh carne sada. Sometimes they cook it to death. Other times it's ABSOLOUTELY FANTASTIC.

I probably won't give the El Famous a try since I think most of their stuff is salty, cheap, and disgusting. (I used to REGULARLY see the El Famous crew eating at the Las Asada's in Des Plaines)

So far, Monica's has been pretty good to me (for places around here) and I'm a pretty harsh judge of taquerias. I pretty much don't go to a taqueria unless it's got a char grill going for the Carne Asada like Las Asada's, but Monica's has been serviceable.

its located in downtown northbrook, in the same shopping area as sunset foods and the book bin. (i beleive on cherry?)

i usually go there for brunch with friends
i hear their wraps are good
the only thing i've tried is the spinach and feta cheese omelet which is superb!

I'll have to try Georgie V's next time I'm over that way--that strip mall is where my dentist's office is.

It is? Damn, I always liked it. As you can tell, it's been years since I've been there--it was the last time I lived up here, about 11 years ago.

Oh, well, Wildfire it is.

Little Louie's now has some "healthy" meals on their menu. I haven't gone there yet but I do hear that some of the wraps and salads are good.

Tong's Chinese in Sander's court (where the Dominicks is on Dundee/Sanders) is good. There is a pizza place in there called Marisa's pizza.

Tonellis is an italian restaurant at Waukegan and Shermer that has good lunch - sandwiches and pasta.
