I will be getting married in July. My fiancée and I had no idea where to begin our search until I thought to ask to wonderful LTH community for recommendations based on experience.

So, please give me any suggestions you may have. We'll be planning buffet style catering for about eighty people. We'd like food that will be relatively familiar to all ages of people so no one is too weirded out by what's being served. Price is also a factor, so if you have any information about the cost of the catering you've experienced, please provide that as well.

Your help is greatly appreciated by me, my fiancée, and the stomachs of our guests.

    unhappy,

Melissa Graham, my friend and long-time moderator of LTH, runs a catering service that I have every reason to believe is one of the best in the city. You mention price is a factor, and my guess is that she is not an inexpensive option, but why don't you contact her and see what she can tell you. At the very least, she can point you to someone who will meet your needs. Her website address is: http://monogrammeevents.com/

Depending on the style of food you're looking for and (to a lesser degree) how upscale the venue is, I'd consider giving Chuck's in Burbank a call. He just demonstrated his chops at the 550 person Mardi Gras Bash and did a great job.

ahhh well.. this is the business I'm in, so obviously I'm biased, but I have to recommend Blue Plate Catering. They have a department dedicated to weddings. They don't provide venues, but they can recommend some beautiful or trendy places across the city if you need that. You can check out their sample packet at www.blueplateweddings.com. If you want to be very cutting edge with the food, let them know that, but of course they have a lot of standard menus if that is indeed what you're going for. Your budget is a factor, and Blue Plate can be pricey.... so call and get a quote from them to know for sure. I've photographed a lot of Blue Plate weddings and I see consistently happy clients.

I've heard good things about Limelight Catering for weddings. 773.883.3080

I really wanted to hire Occasions Chicago Catering for my wedding but couldn't due to cost. 312.942.1515

Both will design a menu specific to your needs or ethnic cuisine and cook on site for best quality. Good luck with the search! And be sure to do a taste testing before signing a contract.

I don't have a catering suggestion, but I did want to share my experience. We did a brunch buffet for ~90 at our wedding, split by breakfast-type foods and sliced beef/lunch dishes. Even though we had it split into two parts, we had long lines at the breakfast station. Everyone really liked the buffet but if I had it to do over again, I would have thought about splitting the stations out even more to avoid the lines...or maybe trying to "time" the tables somehow.

I also went to another wedding where along with the usual wedding cake, they had an make-your-own ice cream sundae buffet bar for dessert. That was about seven years ago but it made quite an impression.

    Have fun planning!
