O-Dae San: Al Bap (Los Angeles)

One of the real highlights in my recent 3 1/2-day whirlwind food tour of L.A was the Al Bap at the high-end Korean restaurant O-Dae San.



Note that this dish has FIVE different kinds of fish roe as well as uni, spinach, tamago, unagi, Krab, and an unknown pickled red vegetable (any guesses?) over a bed of high quality sushi rice.

For someone who absolutely loves a good bowl of bap (usually Bi Bim Bap), this was a real treat.

I’ve never come across Al Bap in Chicago.

No, but I will most certainly be on the lookout, as Al Bap looks, sounds and, I'm sure tastes, fantastic.

I couldn't be happier for you, really.

Personally, I found my dish of hwe do bap greatly underwhelming:

But, even though it too was highly recommended by Jonathan Gold (and others), I take the blame for my experience entirely. I guess that I just don't "get" the Korean take on Japanese-style raw fish, that's all.*

The pickles which started our meal, though, were quite nice. So, too, the rice. But, if I ever return, I'll be sure to explore a bit further afield. Some of the items on the tables of our fellow Korean diners looked very intriguing.
