    francheezies?

    oliveburgers?

blt's that cost less, than if one ordered the same, but with an egg on top of the bacon.

and even (fer chrissakes)...a decent side of properly julienned hash browns, fried thru with real butter, instead of a steamy glop of flavorless potatoes?

better to ask... where have all the greek owned, corner diners, gone.

Sander's which is located at the corner of Touhy and Niles Center Road in Skokie.

Dapper's is also a classic and they have quite a few locations. The Addison Mall, Belmont and Cumberland and one on Cumberland near Foster. There might be a few more that I haven't mentioned.

    Hi,

My Mom is a big olive burger fan. I can't tell you how often she comments she cannot find them anymore. I can't tell how often she orders them, which is several times a year. They are frequently available at Greek family restaurants by our experience.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

    Cathy,

Your mother can find a wonderful oliveburger at Boston Blackie's. The nearest one to you is in the strip mall just south of Lake-Cook and just west of Waukegan. When I'm there I normally order an oliveburger with cheddar cheese on toasted dark rye -- a fabulous burger: large, flavorful, and juicy.
I also add a slice of raw onion which years ago was called a Dagwood burger at many coffee shops. The one I frequented was Loree's Snack Shop on Foster west of Kedzie.

Another alternative for a good oliveburger is the Buffalo on the corner of Lake-Cook and Arlington Heights Rds.

Oliveburgers are still featured burger items in Southwest/Western Michigan. If your Mom ever travels there, she can eat them to her heart's content and be hip!

There is a small Greek owned snack shop, (can't rember the name although I have been there several times) in the Lobby level of the 55 E. Washington Building ( SE corner of Wabash and Washington) They pretty much have all the old corner snack shop standards on the menu including very good Francheezies and Olive Burgers.

I actually haven't had an olive burger there, but I've witnessed a friend of mine enjoy an olive burger at Standee's in Uptown. This was my first run in with the sandwich but if it's simply a hamburger patty with a pile of sliced pimiento-stuffed green olives on a white bun, I think you're in luck. The best part is that it's open 24 hours.

I had the potato pancakes. Delicious! Crispy on the outside, steaming on the inside. Served with applesauce and sour cream, if I remember correctly.

Within the past, say, 15 years, the Marquette Inn served oliveburgers. It seems like the type of place where 15 years won't cause the menu to change much.

Confirming that you can still get your olive burger (not to mention your pizza burger, your francheezie and your monte cristo) at the Old Timers Restaurant and Lounge, 75 E. Lake.

Yesterday in Fox Lake, IL my Mother ordered, "An olive burger just like the 50's," a statement said every time she sees one on the menu. I hear it often enough I simply don't believe it is a rare burger.

They used to have a really good one at Carson's Ribs back in the day (I used to boycott ribs when I was a little kid... picky eater).

You can find olive burgers and francheezies at The Buffalo Restaurant in Buffalo Grove. It'a classic greek joint with a decidely jewish twist, much like Jack's in Skokie.

Order your sandwich as a "deluxe" and you'll get soup with it. My fmaily loves their Motzah Ball soup.

Any relation, possibly, to the Monk's Pub in Ballyvaughan, County Clare?

Alas, from what little I could find out about the menu on the internet, not much Irish about it But I like the name.

Gone south, if you ask me. Bad, I mean.

My husband has what I considered an entirely unwarranted warm spot in his heart for Greek-family-owned restaurants. I say it seems entirely unwarranted because the one's we've actually gone to around us (e.g., the Liberty in Libertyville (oh! smacking head - can you believe I just got that?), and Grandma V's at the corner of 45 and 176, be that Mundelein or Libertyville. I've gamely tried the chicken Vesuvio at the latter so many times that now I can't bring myself to order anything more than an iceberg lettuce salad and a cup of tea there any more. At the Liberty, even the tuna melt was so lousy I couldn't finish it -- if you can imagine screwing up a tuna melt. If I could have snuck out to nearby Fodrak's for a gyro and timed my return for when the others were done eating, I would have. And yet my husband and the kids eat the stuff up.

So I wonder too, where are the good "Greek" restaurants, and why don't people seem to care if the other ones aren't any good?

    Hi,

Despite just having had a very nice brunch just hours before. When my Mom saw olive burger on the menu of a root beer drive-in she ordered it.

    Image

What surprised us was the mix of salad cream with the olives. Note I did not say mayonaise or Miracle Whip, this white sauce was something else. I will comment more later on the Beyond Chicago board.

    Cathy2,

Much like your Mom, I have this uncontrollable impulse to order olive burgers almost everytime I see them on the menu when I'm in Michigan. The olives in the salad cream is not uncommon. I don't mind because I'm a mayo on the burger type person, but I could see why someone would detest it. I think it's an acquired taste.

Indeed, Omega would be a good place to start for the olive burger. I don't like olives myself, but my boyfriend finds them better than sex. I like food so I don't find this too much of an insult. As for francheesies, I see them all over in places like this, the 'family restaurant'; try Omega for this too, and Superdawg maybe on Milwaukee & Devon; Sanders, indeed; Norwood Family Restaurant on Northwest Highway & Raven (between Harlem & Nagle), and Blue Angel on Milwaukee and Central, who also has the hash browns you're looking for. Their breakfasts are massive - the omelet plate will keep you busy for hours.

Silly me, I also forgot to mention Family Palace on Harlem and Lawrence. I don't think they have the Olive Burger but who knows, but they do have the other stuff and are Greek owned, as are Omega, Sanders, and Kappys.
