My family is coming into town this weekend with young ones in tow. I live in western UK Village by Chicago and Western, and I'm familiar with a lot of the little spots around my neighborhood. My forays into Humboldt have been few, I must admit, except for discovering and falling in love with Papa's.

I will need options to give to family over the next few days and I'm hoping I can draw on your expertise to recommend some family friendly/cheap places in Humboldt, Wicker, or perhaps also the UK Village.

Feed is a great place to take family (or so I think) and it is cheap; though my guess is you have been here if you live near Chicago/Western (I live at Walton/Washtenaw, perhaps we are neighbors)?

I don't think it's in either Humboldt Park or Ukrainian Village, but it's close: Taqueria Puebla

Well, I guess according to this "official" Chicago Neighborhood Map, it would be Humboldt Park.

Is that what people who live around there call it?

I would second Feed. Good food, to say nothing of the chicken machine. Bring quarters.

Don't know if the weather is warm enough yet, but during the spring, summer and early fall months there are multiple trailers positioned around the park itself, all selling tasty Puerto Rican and Cuban finger foods and snacks. Cheap, yummy and deep fried! What could be better?

Yup, that's the stuff! Once again though, I don't know if it's warm enough for them to be open. Only one way to find out...

They're there all year round. I see them pulling in and setting up every morning at 9 am when I am dropping my kids off at daycare.

Some friends and I had a great dinner last night at La Encantada (North Avenue, just west of Kimball). I can't say the food completely knocked our socks off, but everything was tasty, and the mole was a stand-out. The room itself was beautiful and comfortable. Good margaritas too, and everything very affordably priced.

This was an ambitious renovation in a challenging spot with very little foot traffic. I'm hoping to see this place gather some steam as word gets out. (We were one of only two tables the entire night, which is a shame for this worthy, family-run spot).

I don't live there, but Taqueria Puebla is in the area I've always known as Humboldt Park. The actual Humboldt Park (as in the Chicago Park District) is 4 blocks east of the taqueria.

Althought not quite in Humbolt Park, GNR Winner Honey 1 BBQ is not too far away and would be a great place to go if you're looking for some good BBQ. It's a good place to go coupled with an after dinner visit to Margie's for ice cream.

And they are a nice walking distance apart, so you digest your dinner as you walk down the street for an ice cream cone, then walk back and by the time you get to your car to go home, you're done with the cone :)
