I remember reading about a place in Skokie, maybe Lincolnwood- that makes/manufactures an "old School" matzoh- like ....Biblical style.
It's supposed to be very authentic.
I remeber it being round, not square.
Any idea where to purchase this in Chicago?
    Thanks.

I had never heard of it, but a quick web search turned up information on the place you're referring to:

    CHICAGO'S SHMURA MATZAH FACTORY
    8235 North Christiana
    Skokie, Illinois 60076
    847-674-6200
    chimatzah@msn.com

There's an article about them here.

I'm sure they would be happy to tell you where to buy, if you call or e-mail them.

    Have a Zissen Pesach!

I asked Big Z about this (a man who would know) and he told me that he gets his directly from some Rabbi, but that he is pretty sure that Hungarian Kosher Foods on Oakton and Crawford in Skokie carries them. The lead to the "factory" is probably a good one, too.

UPDATE: Shmura matzoh have been spotted at Garden Fresh Market in Northbrook.

In the past I have seen them at the Jewel on Howard in Evanston.

We just made the pilgrimage to Garden Fresh in Northfield last Saturday evening for our annual Passover shopping spree. My kids always beg for kishke -- this year, I found kishke from Romanian Sausage in the freezer case, so I picked up two. I'm sure it will be better than the commercial stuff we usually get.

I was also happy to see a huge selection of Passover items from Israel, including a boatload of baked goods. My local grocery store has a pitifully small array of matzah, matzah meal and canned macaroons. Since I just started a new job, and I will be at my brother's 50th birthday party in Minnesota this weekend, I will not have time to make in advance all the stuff my family expects to get us through our week of unleavened food products. Most meals are easy -- we just grill meats and veggies -- but we also like to have a little matzah kugel or carrot souffle on the side.

    That's a good suggestion.

For those who are not aware of it, that particular Jewel has a HUGE selection of glatt kosher foods to cater to the large Orthodox Jewish population in Evanston, Rogers Park, and Skokie.

Not just glatt, but kosher and kosher-style foods in general.

Yes, if you want it, I have seen entire (ie whole) cryovac-ed kosher briskets at that Jewel on Howard. But the price - INSANE!

Believe it or not, three or four years ago, I purchased round matzohs from Dominick's on McCormick. (I'm assuming they got them from Shmura.)

Well....the quest for Schmura brand round matzoh, has been ellusive, at best.
The Hungarian Kosher was crowded and chaotic at 9:30am this Sunday, erev Pesach. The second room- where the Schmura matzoh was stocked- looked like the store shelves in southern Florida before a Hurricane is scheduled to land.
    Wiped out!
    Completely.
    No "overstock".
Tried the new Dominicks at 6850 N. McCormick .
    Nada.
    Boob-kies.
The store clerk, doing inventory in the passover Section- shrugged her shoulders, and acted as if she never heard of such things...Round matzoh!
On to the Kosher corner store on Devon near California.
    Nada.
No, they said-" try the Hungarian Grocery on Oakton".
Any other ideas- before tomorrow nights kick-off?!!!
Oh- BTW- Schmura's voicemail is full- accepting no messages- and an email sent to them/and address on their website- went unanswered!
    grrrrrrrr....who knew Round-Old School-Matzoh would be such a Hit????
Maybe I'm in the wrong business??

I'd guess that if you're looking today, you might be outta luck until someone gets re-stocked.

When all else fails, if you've got flour, water, and an oven--you've got matzoh. ;)
