I'm not sure if this really is "beyond chicagoland" but thought to be safe to post it here

I was wondering if folks had any recommendations in the area - not looking for anything fancy just something that would be fun after/during my son's soccer tournament.

    thanks

    Hi,
I pass thru Lowell and sometimes Hebron at least once a week. In Lowell there is an aurelio's pizza(this may have changed names, but is still the same pizza ) at 152 Deanna Drive and also across the street is a Schoops burger restaurant.(151 Deanna Drive.) A nice mexican place called Mi Ranchito-149 w. commercial (route 2) and a new spot called somebody's(?) pub in the old Storks nest building at 312 e. Commercial (route 2).I've been to all of these and the food is good. In hebron the only place I have been to is Marti's Place at Ramsey Landing -17519 N. 700 W. It's right on the river, has a nice view and good food.
These are small towns and it's hard to find good places to eat. I hope these suggestions will help.

Just posted this before I saw this thread.

I grew up in that area and I'm having a hard time thinking of the places that I went with my parents. Pretty funny considering I'd always heard that Merrillville had the highest number of restaurants per capita for any town in the US (whether that is/was true or not). Guess I'm a bit too far removed from my old haunts. I know Schoops has a good burger so I can vouch for that one...

There is the Miller Bakery Cafe in Gary, IN in the Miller Beach area. You can even take the South Shore there. It has apparently been reviewed on Check-please too.

    Zim,
I went by the rest. that I didn't know the exact name of and its McVey's rest. and bar. As I said it's in the old Storks nest spot and they have good food and it's a pretty place. Schoops does have a good burger and is a nice casual spot. I like Marty's place for the view and food, but be warned -it's out of the way and can be hard to find if your not from that area. Pizza---I was raised on aurellios so it's always good for me. I've been to the mexican rest. and thought it was fine for americanized type mexican food. There are a few more pub type places around those two towns, but I've not been to them. Really hard to find great food in that area, but I hope one of these will work for you. :)

My personal favorite in that specific area is Marti's. They have many great things, but I like their yellow lake perch the best. I was surprised to learn how "famous" they were in the northwest Indiana area. Highly recommend. They are in the "middle of nowhere" and are very hard to find, however. Probably not for the locals, though. Their website is http://emartisplace.com/ .

The Pizza House has the best pizza in Lowell. Waaaaaaaaayyyyy better than Aurelios, orange cheesed pizza. They make a killer Chicago pizza, and use minced garlic, if you request it! Some good eats. They only use premium ingredients. It's next to the railroad tracks and looks like a house, on Commercial Drive

I suggest McVey's, as well. I was there for the first time at a wedding reception last Saturday and I had some of the best lake perch and roast beef I've had anywhere. They also make this cucumber vinegar coleslaw that is simply divine.

It's a pretty hip looking place with a retro supper club feel, and I hear that the chef (and owner?) is a young gal with fresh, but skilled tastes. From my one experience, it seems like she's taken the old school NWI classics of lake perch with slaw and kidney beans and revamped them into something new and creative, but that delicious homespun taste of fried perch still prevails!

I hate to do this since they're the competition, but here is The Times review of McVey's. http://www.thetimesonline.com/articles/ ... 78cc1e.prt

And if you want excellent pie for dessert, stop by The Country Kitchen on Main St. in Hebron for the oatmeal-pecan pie that they've been serving since the '30s!

A relative happens to live in Hebron, and since no one in the family can cook, when I visit I take them out to eat.

The best place I've found in the area is Boundary Waters Lodge in DeMotte. Spectacular lake perch and one of the best burgers I've had ANYWHERE. To say it is a diamond in the rough is an understatement!

Be aware that the lower level of the restaurant is a nightclub, and it can get LOUD in the restaurant on Friday and Saturday nights. And while the restaurant is non-smoking, the nightclub is not -- if cigarette smoke bothers you, it WILL interfere with your meal on weekends after about 8PM.

I don't see mention of Bub's BBQ in this thread; it came up in a related I-65/NWI thread and has been on my to-do list since, but I haven't had a chance to give it a try yet.
