EbiChiki didn't sound too bad -- fried chicken and shrimp, why not?

That Pulp Fiction parody was funny...but, they don't say "please" in Israel? I did not know that.

I'm just trying to imagine the reaction I'd have gotten at Leo Burnett around the time Pulp Fiction came out, if I'd proposed a spot involving a McDonald's crew member being held in the trunk of two hitmen... I'd have ended up in a trunk, headed for the Purification Rundown.

Anyway, another one, photographed five days ago in Spain:



The McNifica, with bacon bits on the bun. When Europeans embrace American-style food fakery, they always take it just a little too far even for us....

Mike, is that sign written in slang, or is it a different dialect? Where in Spain was the photo taken?

I think the general gist is "bacon, it's not just for breakfast any more," right?

It's Catalan, this was in Barcelona, though I noticed the McNifica first in Madrid.

Somewhere I have a picture from Hungary in 1991 of a transit billboard explaining "What is a McDonald's?" to the poor souls deprived of such knowledge until that historical moment...

In Philippines, they offer some great combos (IMO) including:

Fried chicken + rice
Fried chicken + spaghetti
Fried chicken + palabok (rice noodles w/shrimp flavored sauce)

In Singapore, sometime last year or the year before....



Fan = rice or meal in Cantonese/Mandarin (different intonation)

Actually, it is April 16th , time for the annual pilgrimage. The store in Crystal Lake is incompetant that generally I get 2-3x the food I actually order and pay for.

Oh, ugh... I had this one in Hong Kong about a year ago. Godawful.

But I'll take the Japanese Ebi Fillet anytime

It's not that there's a shortage of great food in Japan, but I actually enjoy some of McDonald's foreign items when I travel. I'm in Tokyo right now, and was very pleased to try the Ebi-Filet-O. It was a crispy shrimp patty with distinct, good sized pieces of shrimp, beautifully fried, and topped with some mayonnaise-based sauce. This was a pretty damn good sandwich, one I'd be thrilled to find elsewhere.

I'll add that the fries were excellent (not always the case these days) and they had a fried apple pie. While the crust on the fried apple pie was exactly as I remember it growing up, it didn't seem to have more than the smallest pinch of cinnamon. While I seem to recall more cinnamon flavor in the fried US versions, maybe that just didn't produce well in taste testings in Japan. The Ebi Filet-O sounds pretty good. Earlier this year I started reading Golden Arches East in a library where I don't have borrowing privileges. Thanks for reminding me I need to pick up this fascinating book again (my reminder photo didn't seem to do the trick).



That's the first edition but a new edition has been out for a while now. A major theme of this multi-author book is that in many Asian (and other) countries McDonalds has been so thoroughly assimilated that it is no longer regarded as foreign company. Worth reading for a number of reasons.

This article shows pictures of some foreign McDonald's offerings, including the ebi-filet-o . . . there are some other items apparently sold in Japan that I didn't get to try. I would have definitely liked to try the fried taro pie and the Matcha McFlurry.
