The NY Times had an interesting article today about how chaat in India is going upscale, moving off of the streets, and into malls and trendy restaurants. It was an interesting article that helped me better understand the concept of chaat, and included a long list of places to find chaat in NYC. (Sukhadia, which has an NYC location, was mentioned.) Some of the establishments they list have websites, so I enjoyed going through the websites and looking at the menus. Here's a link to the article. Free registration may be required:

if you're a times select subscriber there's also a nice article here:

it includes a quote from one my favorite food writing anywhere on the satisfaction that accompanies eating good chaat

"In that state of beatitude the Maharashtrians stop being surly, the Marwaris look at the millions of stars without being reminded of their own millions, the Sindhis admire the horizon without any intention of selling it, the Gujaratis speculate on the moon instead of the scrips they should have sold, the North Indians dream of things other than Hindi as the official language of the United Nations, and even the Parsi ladies stop nagging their husbands."

Many people can access Times Select articles through databases provided by their public libraries.

Chicago Public Library cardholders can go to http://piscator2.chipublib.org/ChicagoA ... 64107&zip= and put in their card number. Then scroll down to National Newspapers, click on Go Directly to National Newspapers (Proquest). Put in your search terms, making sure to put New York Times under More Search Options. When citing an article, it is helpful to include the date and title or author. I almost overlooked the article above because I didn't expect it to be from 2005.
