I saw some banners on a couple of places on Lincoln last night for Friday Fish Frys and it made make me hungry, only catch is, I have kids. Are there any places that do a family-friendly (kids actually allowed) fish fry? I don't mind a tavern if it is the kind of place where kids are welcome, but I want good fish. I live on the north side but would be willing to trek a bit if the quality was worth it. thanks in advance!

I can't speak to the quality, but Candlelite in Rogers Park serves fish and chips, although I think it's a recurring special, not a regular menu item.

Candlelite is definitely an example of a "family-friendly tavern." I've been with friends who have kids and it's comfortable and easy going for that kind of crowd.

We really like the Friday Fish Fry at the Irish American Heritage Center. It's in the pub, but the dining area is away from the bar. It's served as a buffet, but we usually go early and the fish is very crisp and fresh.

I've been to both, my son loves fish and chips! I'm trying to think of a fish and chips dinner where my kids weren't welcome.

That reminds me -- Celtic Knot, where Octarine has been known to do some work, also has good fish and chips.

I might guess that some places like Duke of Perth might be a little hectic with folks out for drinks on a Friday evening -- they might not turn away a family (I have only actually been once) but it might qualify as less family-friendly.

When I went, which was after work on a Wednesday, I think, it would have been easy and comfortable to have the whole family. It wasn't crowded at all.

I've got a soft spot in my heart for both places Joe mentioned.

The Duke of Perth for helping along my first daughters' entry into the world- we were a week overdue, went to the Duke for F&C and Bam! 4 hours later we were at St. Joe's.

The Celtic Knot is my home away from home, corny but I've known the owners for 17 years and everyone there is just wonderful. The fish is great too, large pieces that are moist and crispy.
