I was at Paulina Meat Market a couple months ago, and was already anticipating grilling season: while the gentleman behind the counter was prepping my boneless leg of lamb roast, I inquired as to the availability of Brat Burgers: patties made from bratwurst sans casing.

He looked at me like I had grown two heads, or like I had told him I was going to use a Sandra Lee recipe.

I used to be able to find brat burgers at a place called Prisco's in Aurora, and I remember coming across them at Dominicks, of all places. Has anyone run across them lately?

Buy the brats, don't tell them why you want them, slice them open, remove meat, form patty.

    Jim and Gary's

Frozen items can be shipped directly to you using overnight delivery.

From an old post of mine:
Food Nut wrote:The ultimate 2004 holiday gift is from Jim & Gary's, a meat vendor in Pecatonica, IL, "conveniently located at the corner of Highway 20 and Jackson Rd., just east of the the State Police Station." It's about 1 1/2 hours west of Chicago. I recieved the Cattleman's Combo box with Black Angus T-bones, Ribeyes, NY Strips, and Filets. Love their pork ribs already, and I am anxious to have steak regularly for awhile. Jim and Gary's cares for their own pigs and the pigs are hormone and steroid free. Don't know if the beef is the same.

Exactly what I thought when I read Whiskeybent's post.

Another way to do brats is to butterfly them, char grill, and eat on a hamburger bun.

Sorg's Meats in Darien, WI (US 14) sells brat patties.

Also, you can find them at any Woodman's store in the Chicago area.

Thanks for the memories, I have fond recollections of visiting friends in Sheboygan during the summer. We would always make a point to stop by the Boy Scout grills set up next to the grocery stores for some Johnsonville Brat Burgers. I think I prefer them over the brats due to the increased surface area and attendant crispy charred ***** goodness.
I used to think the brain was the most important part of the body. Then I realized who was telling me that.

or eat 'em like they do in Sheboygan - double brat - 2 brats on a roll with mustard, onions, pickle.

That reminds me of how Shelton's, this little diner in Highland Park when I was a kid, used to serve their hotdogs...

I think Schmeisser's in Niles does them. They also have seasoned burgers they call "Schmeisser patties," not to mention dry-aged prime beef and wonderful smoked goose.

    LOVE EM!
I used to get them at Cub Foods.
Now that they have closed the Chicago Stores......maybe the "closest in" store in Indiana, or Wisconsin??!!
Their only downside is that they were pressed to about a 1/2" thick- so they cooked real fast...

I see the Johnsonville Brat Burgers wherever I buy my Johnsonville brats. I even have a couple of bars out where I live that sell bratburgers on the menu, they also have the breaded pork tenderloin sandwiches the size of a small frisbee out here too.

I live out by Starved Rock, but work near Chicago.

Re: Sheboygan, Bratdays is coming up I think the weekend of Aug 2,3,4. Tons of Johnsonville brats, music, and the brat eating contest that Kobiyashi won last year. I am going again this year.

I just checked the Paulina website and they show a bacon cheddar brat burger, as well as the torpedos, a mild Italian sausage patty.

    At the ever-amazing new (one year-old now :D )
    Pete's Fresh Market,
I chatted w/ the Manager of the Butcher Shop
last week about Brat Burgers- and he said
they'd have 'em the next day.

If you go and don't see them displayed for sale- just
ask one of the Meat-Men for the "Jeffe" (Boss-Man)
and he will be happy to oblige you.

    FWIW-Pete's also makes in-house-
a great Lamb Sausage too- perfect for grilling,
as well as a "Merguesz"-shaped Lamb Sausage-
(sadly the taste is not -like the shape- nor
    reminiscent of Moroccan Sausage !)
