Saturday night, hubby and I celebrated our 10 year wedding anniverssary at Spring. I made the reservations on opentable.com, where I told them it was our anniversary and that I was 8 months pregnant.
We were seated promptly at 7PM. We loved the decor, layout and atmosphere. Simple, low lights, subtle music in the background, not too loud, even though it was packed.
Service was excellent - attentive w/out being overbearing. They brought us a complimentary sparkling apple cider. I am overall not at all thrilled with the non-alcoholic beer and wine choices, so I had low expectations. This though, was pretty good - a bit tart, full apple flavor, not too sweet and overall a nice apertif. Amuse bouche followed, it was like a vietnamese summer roll, hubbies had tuna, mine only had veggies. The sauce was excellent - spicy, soy and sweet all in one.
Appetizers -hubby had the foie gras mousseline. Tasty, a bit too delicate almost. The pineapple quince on the side was also good, it added a slightly sweet tangy taste. I had the thai prawn salad - hearts of palm, bean sprouts, spinach, lettuce, carrots, prawns in a spicy dressing with a roasted key lime to spritz over. This was excellent - crisp, spicy, fresh with a bit of citrus.
Main courses -hubby had the house specialty - diver scallops with braised oxtail and broccoli rabe. Very good, scallops were huge and perfectly cooked, oxtail melted in your mouth. Hubby enjoyed it, but felt it was missing something (not sure what...). I thought it was great and wasn't missing anything.. I had the sole with lobster, purple potato and cauliflower salad. THe sole was perfect - delicate, mild. There were only 3 popcorn sized pieces of lobster, so it was a bit disappointing - they were ok, not too much flavor. The potato and cauliflower salad was actually just blue potatos cut into fry like form with sauteed cauliflower - nothing too special, tasty, but the server upsold it as something unique, which it really wasn't. I would say this dish was very good, not excellent, lacking a bit in the sides, although the sole was excellent.
Desserts though, were excellent. I had the chocolate-peanut butter dome with clover honey foam. I am leery of foam, to me it always looks like I am about to eat shaving cream. But this went well with the dessert, it was very delicate and barely a hint of honey flavor. I couldn't distinguish the clover in it. This was one of the best desserts I have ever had. Deep chocolate flaover on the outside and a peanutty interior that tasted like peanuts not sugar. Hubby had the grilled pound cake with lemon custard and goats milk ice cream. This wasn't quite as good as the doam, but it was definitely unique. The lemond custard and goats milk ice cream stood out - very nice fresh lemon flavor and a creamy, not too heavy ice cream.
At the end we received a shot of chocolate-fennel soup, which was excellent, dense chocolate flavor, but again I couldn't really distinguish the fennel.
Hubby had a few glasses of red, a Spanish Rioja, I believe, can't remember other details.. It was pretty good, needed to open up a bit and was better once it had some time/air.
Overall, a verygood anniversary dinner. Last year we went to Blackbird, which I would give a slight edge on the main courses, but I would go back to Spring again.
