My dear fiance loves a Nathan's hot dog. I don't really understand the charm, but they are his favorite. Short of ordering from their online store (www.nathansfamous.com) is there anywhere I can get these in the Chicagoland area? I seem to recall some gas stations serving them for a while- the Delta Sonic on North Ave in Melrose Park comes to mind- but I'd prefer to cook them myself. Any suggestions?

I get mine at the Jewel. Not sure if all Jewels carry them, but I know they have them at the one by Ashland and Bryn Mawr.

I've also bought them at both Jewel and Dominick's, so check them out first!

...Now I want hot dogs too! Mmmmm.

Thanks for the quick suggestions. I knew they had to be locally distributed somehow... off to the Jewels I go!

I know you said that you were looking to cook them yourself, but I recently noticed that both Gino's East on Wells and Ed Debevic's right across the street prominently advertise Nathan's products.

Seems pretty weird that supposed Chicago institutions in the heart of a place frequented by visitors looking for Chicago experiences would throw their lot in with an East Coast dog. Not exactly surprising, but illustrative.

I found them at the Jewel on Lake Street in River Forest tonight. And they were on sale to boot... although 2 for $8 doesn't exactly seem like a sale. But the fiance will be happy. I will definitely check out some of the other suggestions should I need to buy them in bulk. Personally I don't really understand the mystique of Nathan's; I am waiting for my chance at Papaya King someday. Thanks again...

Strike the below: I checked the site and Nathan's is no longer listed under John Morrell's brands, so it appears they've changed licensees or something.

Nathan's Hot Dogs, at least the nationally distributed kind, are made by the John Morrell Co. of Iowa under license. Not a bad dog, but there are better ones in town, and I don't know how accurate the Morrell version is to the Coney Island original. Anyway, the reason Chicago restaurants promote it may have less to do with New York than with their preexisting relationships with Morrell or some other distributor for a variety of meats.

In my adventures I've only been able to find the skinless version of a Nathan's product in the local Jewel. However, I did find the natural casing variety at Woodman's in North Aurora. IMHO, these are two completely different animals.
