So last week I was reading an essay by Brian Carpenter on Kentucky bourbon ("The South's Thirsty Muse" in
Cornbread Nation 1), and I suddenly had a craving for a mint julep. I searched these boards, but couldn't find any suggestions on where to get a good one.
Well as the Derby Day approaches, various bars and restaurants will be offering up their versions of the drink. I even noticed that the Sun Times offered a lengthy list of places to celebrate the event, and that they included such suggestions as the Mint Julep Maker's Mark Mojito (with rum, lime and crushed mint) at Nacional 27.
Now, Carpenter's essay quotes Irvin Cobb on the subject of this kind of variation: "Any guy who'd put rye in a mint julep and crush the leaves would put a scorpion in a baby's bed." I don't feel as strongly as Mr. Cobb, but I would like to try for a measure of authenticity.
Any suggestions?
