So, is this a holiday for Vietnamese families? Or is there some other reason almost every Vietnamese restaurant, store, or office on Argyle St. was closed tonight. We didn't go hungry, but the one open place was packed, and it was only packed with Caucasians. So everyone of Vietnamese heritage seems to have been somewhere else. Anyone know where?

I had the same problem this afternoon and also wondered what was up. Tank and Hoang Thanh were both closed. Ended up going to Thai Grocery, which as usual did not disappoint. A couple of Vietnamese places were open, though: Ba Le, Pho 888, and Hong Xuong Bakery.

By the way, that new, upscale-ish bakery/cafe across from Tank seems to be closed for good. (A sign says "Closed for Vacation", but come on.)

A site called Washington Diplomat says this:

    VIETNAM
    May 2: Vietnamese Holiday
    May 3: Vietnamese Labor Day

which doesn't really tell you anything you didn't already suspect.

    You guys are way off.

The daughter of the owners of Tank had a wedding and reception today.

The reception itself was held at Furama, and a fair percentage of those in attendance were from the local commercial community.

    Big numbers. Huge numbers.

54 tables. Ten diners per table.

I saw only one other Anglo in the place, and I brought her.

    Thanks.

Fortunately, I'd had dinner at Tank on Tuesday, so it was okay having to find a substitute. But it was crowded.

Hmmmph.. and I thought it was for my 30th birthday... although, and how's this for irony, I, a dedicated grubhound, come down with a stomach bug the night of my b-day. Oh well, make up dinner on Sunday :D

Funny -- I did a real double-take before I realized you were insulting yourself.
