I work in Evanston and live in Lakeview, so on the occasions when I drive to/from work, one of my paths takes me through Little Chinatown. I often stop by Golden Pacific for groceries, but recently I've been wondering if there's a good Chinese BBQ in the area? Somewhere I can get a nice roast duck to take home.

    Thanks a bunch.

You have got to be kidding.

Sun Wah and Hon Kee -- both have ducks hanging in the window. Ever walk down the street? People seem to prefer Sun Wah -- Hon Kee's not bad, I like the sauce (au jus) a bit better and they seem to be a few bucks cheaper.

Hubby (from Singapore) and I favor Hon Kee. The guys that work there are pretty nice, and the prices are reasonable. We've been to another one, maybe the other place you referred to, but we just prefer Hon Kee. All the meat that I've had at Hon Kee is great, especially the Char Sew/red pork. It's delicious with noodles and a green vegetable. Simple, but very good.

    Kernelm,

Sun Wah, Hong Kee and Vinh Phat. I tend to favor, at least currently, Sun Wah, all three are solid options.

In addition to Chinese BBQ, and the myriad of restaurant options, Thai Grocery has prepared food on offer in the rear of the grocery. Also, if you continue through the BBQ portion of Vinh Phat there is a Banh Mi shop.

    Enjoy,
    Gary

My 2 cents....Hon Kee for Char siew and roast baby pig HK style , Sun Wah for birds of all types. Thai grocery for beef and pork jerky.

Jingle, jingle (Fumbles in pocket for 2¢).

My vote for Vinh Phat's Cantonese style duck. Best on the strip with a strong liver note in the sauce. Mmm...liver

I'm with kuhdo (and I believe Erik M.) who have piped up about the roast pork from Hon Kee. Beats the rest hands down. Crackly, crispy skin. Be sure to ask for a lean cut. With regard to poultry, I like their PiPa style duck which is unusually moist and tender.

The only roast meat I get at Sun Wah is their soy sauce braised chicken which I think is above average. Otherwise, I tend to order either prepared dishes or the roast pork/soy sauce chicken lunchboxes that Gary has raved about in the past. I think they recently raised the price a whopping 15¢. Still an incredible deal, particularly when you step off the El platform, wounded and weary from the trials of the day, and can't bear the thought of lifting a finger for dinner.
