Now that Cambridge House has closed, where does one go for early-morning breakfast downtown? Google is failing me. My friend is staying at a hotel, but we'd prefer not to eat there if possible. East of State/north of the river would be fab, but we'll take what we can get at this point. Thanks.

I'm not sure what your northern border is, but the first place that comes to my mind is Tempo. It's a 24-hour Greek diner owned by the Santorini in Greektown. Love their omelettes. It's 2-3 blocks north of Chicago, and just east of State.

. . . and a couple of blocks in the other direction and across the river you'll find Heaven on Seven open for breakfast (with a creole touch) weekdays at 8:30. Not a diner, but if you crave cheese grits w/ eggs and andouille (as well as anything with bananas and brown sugar), that's the place.

Lots of places to have breakfast, very few that are of the old school Cambridge House ilk.

Except: The coffee shop in the Ohio House Motel, at Ohio and LaSalle.

A little grimy-looking, but don't be dissuaded---it's excellent and cheap ($3.85 for the "Deuces Wild" breakfast special).

    Opens at 5:30 am.

A short cab ride away, on the west side of the Loop around the train stations, is the quintessential Chicago "diner-type" restaurant experience since 1923:

    Lou Mitchell's
    565 W Jackson Blvd
    Chicago, IL 60661-5701
    (312) 939-3111
opens at 5:30 am Monday-Saturday, at 7:00 am Sunday

Also a short cab ride away, not exactly a diner, but a place where you can get a great omelette or the wonderful baked apple pancake pictured below:

    Original Pancake House
    22 East Bellevue
    Chicago, Illinois 60611
    312-642-7917
opens at 7:00 am every day

Although it's been a while, I used to visit Brett's Kitchen frequently for a very serviceable egg sandwhich and coffee to go. It was always fun to watch the cooks preparing your meal from the diner counter.
