I know that we are not the only parents in LTH-land who have to constantly monitor what our peanut/treenut allergic kids eat. And after a visit to the emergency room a year or so ago, I now know that the ubiquitous statement "May contain traces of nuts" on nearly every cookie and piece of candy these days is, unfortunately, true and problematic for our son.

So I'm happy to have found one brand of cookie, Dare, from Canada, which manufactures all of its cookies in factories which are peanut and tree nut free. Here's a link to details about this on their website, for anyone who may be interested:
    http://www.darefoods.com/ca-en/nutritio ... ndex.shtml

The Treasure Island on Elm has three kinds of Dare cookies, maple creme, double fudge, and coconut creme, for $3.19 for 350g. I've only had the double fudge so far, which were great, but will be trying the maple creme later this evening, I bet.

If people have seen Dare cookies elsewhere, I'd be interested in hearing where, or if anyone knows of other manufacturers who are doing this.

I believe that Dare also manufactures cookies under the "PRESIDENT'S CHOICE" brand.

The maple creme are real favorites among my family although they are far too sweet for my taste.

I don't usually buy store-bought cookies BUT I had a gift certificate at Aldi's. Their devil's food cookies disclose that they contain flour and eggs in big letters. There is no mention of nuts.

I buy Dare Breton crackers at Morse Ave. Market (I know that is a long way from where you live). I have a weakness for the cheese flavored mini crackers. I have never noticed whether they carry the cookies. I am pretty sure the crackers are also marked nut free.

Enjoy Life Foods (located here in Chicago) has a factory they keep free of the common 8 allergens. So, you can buy any of their products and know they are nut free. Some of the products are just so-so, but some are decent, especially considering what they do not have in them. Although you don't have to watch those other things, at least you do have another option.
