    Hey, all!

Despite its strictly verboten status in the city, I imagine there must be a few spots in the 'burbs that are still pushing foie. Anybody know of a place that'll sell low quantity? I probably don't need more than a few ounces, so I hate to go the mail-order route.

I'd imagine any of the better grocers in the burbs would have it. I'd start the search at Sunset Foods and see where that leaves you. Be careful crossing the border back into the city!

i have never seen fresh foie gras in any store, only the canned pate version. I am sure that it sould be special ordered for you, or you could go to either the dartagnan or grimaud farms websites and order it.

    http://www.dartagnan.com http://www.grimaud.com

I know that dartagnan sells it by the slice, but either place will nail you for overnight shipping, although shipping is free at dartagnan for any order over $250, and you could order an extra 25 pounds of duck breasts and freeze them.

Order a Grade C from Hudson Valley http://www.hudsonvalleyfoiegras.com/ . Call, it's not on the website. You will save money and for seared foie, you can't tell the difference. Slice into portions, put between wax paper and freeze what you don't use. Works great! -Dick

I thought only restaurants were under the ban - can't you waltz in to any finer grocery store and get it?

    (I wonder, could you BYOF?)

Foie is a perishable item and Grade A is costly. I don't know of a single store in the Midwest that has fresh foie. If you could find one, for the markup on a couple of ounces of Grade A, you can order and ship one Grade C foie for I would guess the same price. I have two Grade C in my freezer as I type from my XMAS/NewYears order. They will be fine until next Xmas when I order more.-Dick

F&O used to have it on hand and would sell by the slice. Hence, my need for a new source :-(

We're doing a cross-country move in a month, so ordering and freezing a large quantity of anything isn't really an option. To the phones I go. I'll report back if I find anything

    Thanks for the help!

I used to get it regularly at Chicago Wild Game on Ogden. You could order whatever grade you wanted, and it was significantly less than mail order.

Well, I'm discovering that the biggest impediment is the quantity I'm looking for. I didn't realize how unusual it was that Fox & Obel used to sell by the slice. Everything's whole lobe.

Apparently, Will, D'Artagnan used to sell by the slice, but doesn't any longer. I got the impression that this may be a transitional thing and they may be reintroducing smaller quantity in the future, but for the time being they're also whole lobe only.

Sooo... anybody want to go in with me and split a lobe two or three ways for this weekend? :-)

    Any success DMNKLY?

Looking to get some for this weekend, certainly don't want to stub for a whole lobe however...

    Gepperths maybe?

Sorry, no success. Full lobe or bust, apparently.

(The results were delicious, if more expensive than I would have liked :-) )

Gepp's has some in stock, they said they'd be willing to cut one lobe in half depending on size. So you could get around .75 lbs at smallest. Not bad. Gonna head over tomorrow.

This info is a year old, but worth checking:

"The fuss about foie gras," The Daily Herald, Sept. 13, 2006, wrote:Where to buy it: Prepared foie gras pates are readily available at gourmet stores. Fresh, raw foie gras is harder to find. Locally, Urban Harvest, 4 S. Vail St., Arlington Heights, usually stocks it, though it's best to call ahead at (847) 632-0860. At press time, the price was $38 per half pound. Treasure Island, 911 Ridge Road, Wilmette, also usually carries foie gras; it was $43 per pound at press time; they also advise calling ahead: (847) 256-5033. Sunset Food Mart stores, including 1451 Peterson Road, Libertyville, (847) 573-9570, will special-order, at about $50 per pound, with a few days' notice.
