Talked to the ched Mon night, double cooked fries, texas style NO BEAN chili, I'm looking forward to it.

They will add spaghetti to your chili for a buck, I asked if they were planning on doing a Skyline or Cincinnati 5 way type and while he hadn't thought about it he acknowledged it would be dead easy to add.

Uber Burger will be opening today at 11:00 a.m. I've got a date at Kansaku for dinner but I'm hoping to swing by and try a banana split for dessert.

As an LTH'er I think that I need to get the "two restaurants in one outing" on the table as soon as possible, make sure she's cool with that :D

I'd be interested in hearing your take on Kansaku -- we enjoyed our trip there last winter, but have heard mixed reviews since then.

Got back from Uber Burger an hour or so ago. (Dropping the umlauts for search-engine and ease-of-typing purposes.) I don't want to be overly critical as I was the third patron at the restaurant -- and possibly the second paying customer -- so I hope you can form your own judgments should you take the time to visit. I will say, though, that the Big Burger (one patty) and Fresh Cut Fries (a big basketful suitable for sharing) aren't challenging the quality Wiener & Still Champion quite yet, despite leaving the skin on the fries and offering exotic sauces on the side, for the burger, like Amelia's Roasted Garlic & Whole Grain Mustard Aioli. Perhaps we'll have to wait and see how things turn out over the next few days/weeks to pass more definitive judgment. After all, they were still readjusting a wall menu and attaching an outdoor sign while I was eating there.

At any rate, they're offering the Big Burger for $2.00 instead of the regular $3.79 for the rest of the week, according to the waiter who served me. Yup, this is a sit-down establishment with carry out available as well, and I paid for my meal at the register after eating. (The credit-card processing should be up and running by the end of the day or tomorrow.) The atmosphere inside was relaxed and the pumped-in music eclectic, but I'd simply forgotten how many people pass by Church Street at the noon hour; if yer into people watching, the huge windows oughtta be a dream come true. I had to be in downtown Evanston today and was looking for a good lunch option, so I thank Octarine for the opening-day heads-up.

In addition, if you want to support auto-emissions reduction in Illinois, simply talk to the young ladies from Environment Annoy(?) on Church Street nearby. Talkin' green after filling up on a burger... there's nothin' quite like it.

Here's the inside of the takeout menu I took from the table and scanned in (the just-the-facts outside can be found here):

I fully expect vivid photos of the food itself to be posted by future patrons. :)

    Tried it. Meh.

Patty was McDonald's-size and quality; bun was decent; fries good. "Cheese" was some not-very-tasty spread. Clearly this place aims to distinguish itself by its sauces, most of which seem to be commercial ketchup, mayo, etc. with some spices mixed in. Their ice cream is from Homer's.

In the area, both W&SC and Dixie Kitchen make far better burgers. This place was packed, though, so who knows. One of the envirobabes thought my take-out looked really good.

To my taste it is a very different burger than Wiener or Dixie, or the Knot, or Herms, or Mt Olympus...or most of the other places in the area. It's not as greasy, smaller, on a nice bun with shredded lettuce. I was there about 9:30 pm and they had a blockbuster opening day. They ordered 400 burgers and when I left there were 6 left.

I didn't have much else as I had just eaten sushi at Kansaku (ok but the company made up for the food) and chocolate cake at La Petit Amelia (wow) but I will have dinner there tonight and try the fries which look good with a bowl of Texas (NO BEAN) chili.

    Just fries.

The place was packed last night. It must be those $2 burgers. (There was also a sports team of some kind having dinner when we arrived.) The meal was OK. Ditto much of what's already been said here. I'd never had cheese sauce on a burger before--with the veggie burger, it was almost all too slimy for me. I thought the patties were considerably better than McDonald's quality. That said, they were average burgers. Same thing for the fries. The ketchup at the table was too diluted, and I barely tasted the horseradish in the horseradish ketchup I got on my burger. (Granted, I'm always complaining about not enough horseradish.) But by the end of the meal, I was satisfied.

I wish Uber Burger luck. Businesses in this space haven't done very well in the 10 or so years I've been around Evanston. My office is in the process of planning an informal celebratory dinner for some students with a very small budget. I've recommended Uber Burger and Tacos del Lago over on Clark. There aren't many sit-down places in downtown Evanston in this price range.

I had a chili burger with green tomatillo salsa and that was very nice. I am a fan of the fries; I find them similar to Hopleafs' at a fraction of the price.

The chili was just my style, no beans, pulled beef with the tiniest hint of cinnamon to counter the chiles. Not for everyone to be sure, it reminded me more of Brunswick Stew sans corn and other veg but that's fine by me.

I work just around the corner, but have yet to venture in - for me, the burger is a semi-sacred experience, for which calorie deficits are stored to be spent on truly worthwhile hunks of meat. I hesitate to use my burger credits on an unknown quantity, one that seems to be eliciting a "meh" at that.

However, the veggie burger made my ears perk. Also $2? Worthwhile!

Has anyone tried the fried pickles? I saw an episode of "diner, drive-in's and dives" last week and this placein Memphis offered them and they immediatley jumped to the top of my "must try" food list. Is it worth the drive from LP?

Not to hijack the thread in any major way, but if you "must try" fried pickles, you might consider Memphis Jack's BBQ in Hillside as a source for them ( http://memphisjacks.com/where.htm ) ...The BBQ itself is, well, it's not Honey One or Smoque, but if you gotta have fried pickles, that well might override any other parallel styistic issues over BBQ nuances.

I stopped in a few days ago to check em out. I'm not going to comment on the food but what surprised me was the pricing.

They are charging $3.79 for a 1/4lb burger. That brings it to $4.10-4.12 with tax. That is kinda high.

In comparison, just a few mins away, you can get a 1/3 lb burger ( 33% Bigger) with a small order of fries for $4.25 tax included at W&SC.

With all these new burger places popping up, maybe it's time for an Evanston Burger-a-thon.

Largely because of it's convenience to the newly renovated Evanston Public Library children's section, we've eaten at Uberburger twice now. While I can name a number of other places where I'd rather eat, it fits the bill for quick post-or pre-library-with-kid-in-tow visits. In another thread, I discussed my distaste for their fried pickles. I may also have mentioned the excess that is their chili-cheese fries (heaping basket of good fries covered in unfortunate gloop)

Today, we opted for an actual meal:
Big Bürger (which is one patty, the "Bigger" is two and the "Über" is 3 patties) combo: burger, fries, drink

    Image

    Umlaut-free Mac-n-cheese:

    Image

And surprisingly good, if excessively large, Buffalo Chicken Sandwich:

    Image

The Big Burger has a big bun and lots of stuff on it, including some nice fresh pickle chips, but big is a misnomer - it was thin and relatively small in diameter - it's sized like McDonalds'. IMHO, in today's world of excess this wouldn't be a drawback, except the bun and toppings are sized for a much larger patty. More importantly, while the beef itself was flavorful, (turkey and veggie options are available) the burger could certainly have been cooked better - it was cooked more thoroughly than I prefer, and without a proper sear - almost completely lacking caramelization.
    Image
The garlic-mustard aioli I chose as my "sauce" was basically mayo with a bit of mustard in it (extrapolating from this, I'm guessing that the "Horseradish Ketchup" is cocktail sauce.) The fries, however, were pretty good: fresh-cut as promised, could have been a bit crisper but not soggy or greasy by any manner of means. The Mac-n-cheese satisfied Sparky; a fairly bland, slightly floury sauce on nice firm noodles. I suspect it would have tasted cheesier if Sparky hadn't slurped the topping of shredded cheddar instead of mixing it in. The star of the meal (oddly, considering the name) was the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich: a moist, flavorful chicken breast that had been lightly fried and then dipped in a vinegary pepper sauce: just on the top edge of my tolerance for heat, the 'spouse rated as spicy but not suicide for heat.

This repast (plus one more drink) set us back slightly less than $17, which seemed appropriate for the meal, despite its quirks. Again, they have the advantage of being a lunch place at a location we frequent - so, FWIW, though it's not a destination, we'll probably be back.

I found the following mention on craigslist:

We are planning to open a hot dog/hamburger stand in Downtown Evanston! I need friendly energetic people with a desire to succeed. Hiring immediately!
