    Hi,

Costco in Glenview was offering yesterday one gallon aluminum can barrel of Virgil's Micro Brewed Rootbeer. The tag line, "Using Natural Ingredients, We Brew A Root Beer So Pure, So Rich and Creamy, You'll Swear It's Made in Heaven." Ingredients: Carbonated water, unbleached cane sugar, natural caramel color, all 100% natural flavors. Made in LA, a pricey $9.99.

Is anyone familiar with this rootbeer? Is it worth the price?

    Thanks!

    Regards,
    Cathy2

No, pick up a 24 pack of Goose Island bottles for $12.59 instead. (This might only be at the Clybourn location).

It's good root beer, but not $10/gallon good. If it was a $5 gallon, yes.

    Here's a review over at RootBeerReviews.com

It's also reviewed over at Luke's Root Beer, less favorably.

I buy GI root beer at the Naperville Costco. A little on the sweet, creamy side for me, could have more rooty flavor, but not bad at all.

I looked at the Virgil gallons last week before picking up some GI, but between the somewhat less convenient package and the cost, I took a pass.

Did buy a mixed case of Boylan's diet soda, Orange Cream, Black Cherry and Root Beer. Pretty good, even if I am not really a big Orange Cream fan. Suppose I prefer their root beer to GI, tho it is not the best comparison to match a diet root beer against a regular one.

Seems like this spring/summer I am on a little Costco premium soda pop kick. Kids home from college seem to appreciate it and I am enjoying a good cold soda when I get back from a hot soccer game.

I enthusiastically bought it, then began to have buyer's remorse. $10 is a lot for a gallon of rootbeer, which I may or may not like. I am tilting toward returning it.

Besides, if you really don't like it, you can still return it even after you've opened it :)

Funny you should bring up Virgil's. I was looking around on the cookingforengineers.com site the other day, and the guy did a taste test of Cream Sodas that were HFCS-free (High Fructose Corn Syrup for those who don't know) and Virgil's came up in first place. So I had plans to check it out sometime.

Let us know how the root beer version is!! :)

Cathy, if you dont like it I'll split the cost and take the undrunk portion, my son loves root beer and will gladly drink it!

My husband likes Virgil's a lot--good thing he refuses to accompany to me to Costco or I fear I'd have a basement full of gallon root beer barrels.

I can take it or leave it but I feel that way about most rootbeers, to be truthful. I recall it as being more tangy and wintergreeny than sugary-creamy, though.

    Regards,

I bought two of the gallon containers of Virgil's last week at Costco and served it at the end of the year get lunch for my son's high school homeroom. The guys loved it, drank every last drop and were disappointed when it was gone. I didn't get a change to drink any because I was too busy cooking and serving, but it was a huge hit for the boys. It was easy to open, great for serving a group, and stayed cold while outside on the table. Yes I know they are (graduating) HS boys, but if they don't like something, they let you know.

I picked up a mini-keg of Virgil's at costco on Clybourn this past weekend. I love root beer and always sample any fresh-home brewed variety I can get my hands on and I thought it was really good. After leaving it in the fridge for a few days, it was ice cold and really refreshing. One of the better root beer's I have had and ill be sure to grab one for my next BBQ party.

The cost was the $9.99 mentioned above and I didnt think it was all that unreasonable. It made for the best root beer float I ever had paired with some vanilla ice cream I had in the fridge.

they sell Virgil's at TJ's (88 cents/bottle !) and it's my first choice when I have a root beer craving. It's real sweet but a clean, frothy sweet rather than syrupy. Rich peppery rootbeer (and as someone mentioned, slightly wintergreeny) flavor. And Virgil looks like a somber lumberjack Jesus on the label, which is cool. Not sure if this helps as you already bought the mini keg already
