There was a post somewhere (I can't find it, though) asking about places serving special Ramadan treats and food. I don't know how unusual or out of the ordinary this is but I know Salaam doesn't USUALLY offer this and the person working there told me they only offered them during Ramadan.

Anyway, I THINK they are called K'nefa (spelling shot in the dark). They're not that easy to explain, but basically it's a pastry with either an almond or cheese filling. The outer shell appears to have been shredded and then put back together after being dipped in honey. The almond inside is somewhat like the sweatness of baklava. The cheese version is a little less sweet. The cheese inside is almost like a mozzeralla, but not quite. A little sweeter and with another flavor I can't quite pinpoint. I know I'm not doing them justice in describing them but they are very good and of course they are super cheap at $1 a piece.

I haven't had time to go inside but I know Al-Kahyam has similar offerings that they don't normally carry.

I noticed something similar to this (although the outside looked more fried pie-like than shreaded) as I was leaving Salam after lunch yesterday. I was finished and full, so I did not stop to ask about what they were.

Thats it. On the outside they appear to be fried pies, but when you bite into it you can see how it was shredded.

i've usually seen the dessert spelled kunafa. if its the ones i think it is (looks like shredded wheat on top, sometimes orange or pink dyed shredded wheat?) then the bakery next to salam carries them year 'round, as do a number of middle eastern bakeries. Personally, my favorite is kulaj which has the sme cheese filling but wrapped in phyllo. Especially the kulaj at olive mountain in evanston.

Yes, thats the one - Ive usually seen it dyed orange (and dipped in honey I think,
as mentioned earlier). Pita Inn calls it "Kinafa", and also offers it every day of
the year (in fact, it is my usual dessert). Have also had it at Jaffer Sweets I think
(and not in Ramadan - so they also do it all the time, probably).
