I need to find a restaurant that is quick, cheap, and good that is within a block or two of the Port Authority. Anyone have any thoughts on this? I don't know that area very well, and will be taking a bus there later in the week. Thanks!

There's a surprisingly good brasserie right inside the Port Authority called Metro Marché. I can only speak for the onion soup, which was excellent.

Tony Luke's, the Philly steak and roast pork sandwich place, has a spot at the port authority. That's the way to go. Remember, "pork Italian."

Don't forget Cupcake Cafe on 39th and Ninth Avenue (before 7:00 p.m. on the east side of Ninth) and also one of the two Manganaro's Heroes on 38th and Ninth (east side) - different parts of the family own each - one is more spiffy, one more authentic - I'd choose the more authentic, but I've eaten at both and both are recommended. Both will provide necessary subsistence for a long bus trip.

I second GAF's recommendation of Manganaro's Hero Boy and also note that Smith's Bar, located a block or two north of the PA, serves hand carved roast beef and corned beef sandwiches from a steam table at a very reasonable price.

I was running short on time (too little time to look for a restaurant), so I grabbed two hot dogs and a drink at Gray's Papaya on the Upper West Side for $3.50 before jumping on the subway to get to my bus. The dogs were excellent there, though the papaya juice was a bit watered down.
