A friend told me she saw a sale ad in the Suntimes food guide that this store sold prime steaks at unbelievable prices. ($5.99a lb for boneless rib eye- whole around 14 lbs ). There prime, but not aged, as anyone had there meats? I would like to split this with my friend , but would hate to spend the money and be stuck with 7lb of ok meat. Thank You.

    Cathy2,
Your not far from this area, what can you tell me about this store? Value your opinion. Thanks

    Hi Kim,

    Thanks for your kind words.

I have never been to this shop. It's near but not quite that near. Let's hope someone closer can advise.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

This is the shop located in The Glen that has been discussed here before. The meat and produce section is supposed to be quite good. In addition to the Prime meat, they also have dry aged prime available. I have not yet been, mostly due to my dislike of The Glen (can you say Pleasantville?).

    Kim,

There are far worse things to be stuck with than 7 lbs. of prime rib eye.

The female and I trekked out to Arlington Heights (Mitsuwa) and Glenview (Market Foods) on Sunday on a lark.

Mitsuwa was nice and easy to find, right off the expressway. We bought some of their fish and accessories, had some sushi, and then went off to try to find Market Foods.

Two hours later after wandering around the neighborhood we finally found Lake Ave (the directions we had did not tell us that Lake was known as Euclid when it meets US 45). So we pulled in front of Market Foods at about 6pm.

The surrounding area is, as the female put it, Stepfordesque. It's what my mom calls "the new urbanism". I call it a fancy strip mall with townhouses above the upscale stores and restaurants. It was fairly eerie, to be honest.

But braving through the crush of SUVs we made our way into Market Foods. The female said it reminded her of fox and obel, which I think is pretty accurate, although Fox and Obel struck me as a bit less like a more-upscale whole foods.

Anyway, we made our way out with four 1lb prime ribeyes ($7.99/lb) and one 13oz dry-aged prime ribeye ($19.99/lb). We pan-fried the dry-aged ribeye in a cast iron skillet in clarified butter last night, and it was spectacular. Rich, buttery, flavorful, juicy, tender. Everything you expect and desire.

If the price of the ribeyes stays that low I may get a vacuum-sealer and make monthly or more trips to stock up. We'll see. For now, I've got four pounds of prime beef and a pound or so of raw sushi-grade fish in my fridge. Should be a good week.

Hey. Why don't you come out to dinner tonight? You need to give us the car anyway. :D Do you happen to have anything you'd want to bring along to cook?
And it's the "new urbanism," not that I know if it really is, having not seen it myself.

Thanks, Ed. Please report back on the $7.99 ribeyes, too. If they taste anything close to prime, that would certainly be worth a trip.

They are in fact prime, or at least taste like it. Highly recommended. It's clearly a loss-leader for them.

This may be a case of too little too late, but I went by Market Food in The Glen yesterday. It looks like they're going out of business. Stocks are pretty well picked over, but what's left of their wines, beers, dairy, deli, cheese, etc. as all 50% off. Even given their somewhat inflated oriignal prices, there are some great bargains - especially in mid-to upper priced wines. But, as I said, they're pretty werll picked over, and I don't know how much longer the doors will be open.
