Hi,
I went to the book sale for about an hour around lunch today. I concentrated only on cookbooks because it was all I could fit into my time slot. There was maybe 200-300 linear feet of cookbooks that I systematically looked at each one row by row picking out curiosities and must-haves into my basket for triage later on. In some cases I picked up two copies of the same book though in varying degrees of condition. I bought some books I am pretty sure I have at home, though I knew I could easily off load them later.
Among the treasures bought:
-
Maryland's Way cookbook commissioned by their Bi-Centennial committee in 1963
-
The Little House Cookbook for young members of the family
-
Columbus Menu: Italian Cuisine after the First Voyage of Christopher Columbus by Stefano Milioni
-
Cookbook of the Seven Seas by Dagmar Freuchen. When making final selections I popped this book open to discover my randomly selected recipes was for
Brain Salad. How can you not give this book some space on a shelf?
-
Culinary Delights created by the Members of the Midwest Chef's Society. A high falutin variation of the community cookbooks. One one page alone there is German potato pancakes, crisp bacon and stewed apples for 25. Just below is Marie Antoinette Parfait served in frosted Champagne glass.
-
Far Eastern Cookery by Madhur Jaffery
For $90.50 I got a lot of fine reading and replacement copies of old favorites.
This is Little City's first year conducting this sale. When I have gone to Brandeis sales, there not only books on the table. There were boxed books underneath waiting to be displayed. While waiting for the car I saw they were still offloading books from the truck to refresh. It is entirely possible books I would have loved have yet to be displayed.
Regards,
