I thought it might be fun to start a thread on "Chicago food" that is outside the Chicago area...deep dish/stuffed and even thin crust pizza, italian beef/sausage, Chicago hot dogs, whatever...places that do justice to what you can find in and around Chicago.

I'll load up a whole bunch of SoCal places in the next few days, but for now I'll throw out a few obvious ones...Papa Del's pizza in Champaign, IL, Rosati's with numerous Arizona locations, Aurelio's has a couple of outposts in the Las Vegas area.

Your listings can include names and what they serve, but also include addresses, phone numbers, websaite and a review if you can.

Let's see what we can come up with for everyone around the country who has moved away from the Chicago area or travels and needs their "Chicago food" fix!

Wow...somewhat coincidental that the first reply is Zachary's...I've heard it being a Bay Area/Chicago legend for years...and I will be experiencing it this week!

Family is making the 400+ mile trek to the Bay Area Friday for a high school graduation and we're all having Zachary's for dinner afterwards. Altogether now...it's a small world after all.

Good idea but middling execution: Joe Mantegna's (actually his wife's) Taste Chicago joint in Burbank. The dogs are Vienna but nothing else is flown-in authentic.

Sorry, no exact addresses or telephone numbers, but:

    Chicago Pizza
    Matsue-shi, Shimane-Ken
    Japan

I was very surprised to find a 'Chicago' place referenced when I lived for a year in Japan's second most rural prefecture.

After experiencing the pizza, however, it was Chicago style in name only. Principally, the Al Capone caricature on the box. In fact, after talking to others, I learned that there was no knowledge of a unique Chicago pizza culture. Rather, they chose it for its gangster image of the 1920s.

Still, an odd, international choice in a rural capitol of 70,000.

As for the pizza? Well, thin-crusted , but not a short-dough style. I think it was a puffy, soft-style dough with minimal cheese and a sweet sauce. I only ever had it delivered so it was probably not at its optimal. And I was frankly willing to overpay for the nostalgia of pizza. And overpay I did, to the tune of $30-$40 a pie. There obviously was a premium for this different-seeming food.

And it was different-seeming even to me. Popular toppings included corn, shrimp and octopus.

CJ Chicago Pizza off Nanjing Rd I think. Decent, but not the real thing by any means. I acutually preferred the italian restuarant pizzas when I was there, much more authentic. First thing I ate when I got back to Chicago from Shanghai, was pizza and wings. Then we'd move to Italian beef and as much mexican food we could get.

Its not near the campus or downtown so you need a car, but this place always hit the spot when I was fiending for beef, Chicago dogs and puff's in my college days. Its not the greatest but ive had worse in the city so it gets the job done.

When I first visited Tony Roma's in Miami as a child, I swear their menu listed "Hackney's Onion Loaf"

They still list an Onion Loaf, as a TR's Signature Item, but nothing in their history about a link to Hackney's

I've actually found a chicago style spot for almost every city Ive spent a period of time living in and this thread sparked memories of Mel's Hot Dog's in Tampa.

They are even in the Vienna Beef Hall of Fame and the hot dog writers association is known for holding its inductees to the highest standards, so at least you know these dogs arent juiced with HGH.

-and on a comical note - There was a Pizzaria Uno in Lahore, Pakistan. I had to rub my eyes, but it was there.

Pizzaria Uno, or Uno's American Grille?
I wouldn't set foot in the latter in any country, after what they've done to our beloved recipe.

I don't suppose the Lahore shop has that nice slab of porky sausage over the top either, does it?

Interesting enough, they have all these awesome spiced beef sausage replacements for sausage and pepperoni - I brought home a coupon sheet from the pizza hut out there that had numerous beef and chicken sausages and pepperoni-type replacement toppings.

I'm pretty sure it was a regular Pizzeria Uno.

Also - Murphy's Red Hots are in Japan, at least according to their menu. They have a couple chicago-dog locations out there.

Pizzeria Uno's franchise Uno Chicago Grill has two locations here in Korea.

Pizza Hut, a couple years ago, had a dreadful "Chicago Dish" pizza. Anyone heard of it? I bought one from their Saipan location, I nearly asked for a refund it was so bad.

I found another imitation of Chicago style pizza in a Sbarro's in Manila. Served stone cold.

Dan Ryan's Chicago Grill is in Hong Kong in the Pacific Place mall. Kind of "eh" as far as Chicago food, but if you're ever in need of an American-style sports bar where you can watch a Bears game while you're there, this is your spot.
