Rijsttafel?

Does Chicago have any good Indonesian restaurants? And more specifically, does it have any that serve rijsttafel? I have been asked to see if I can find anything, and I have had no success on Google, so I thought I'd check with you folks. A search simply turned up posts on people traveling to Amsterdam.

This is an occasional question here with no good answer. Panang in Chinatown has some Indonesian dishes, but whether it has your specific dish, I don't know.

If I recall correctly, the closest Indonesian restaurant is in Madison, Wisconsin.

There are caterers who will prepare Indonesian food in the Chicago area. You may want to contact the Indonesian Consulate to learn the current list.

August Moon at 225 w. 26th used to do an abbreviated ristaffel. I last had it several years ago and thought it was pretty good, though nothing like what you'ld get in the Netherlands or in Indonesia. At the time I believe it was the only ristafel show in town. Actually, now that I think of it, August moon was really pretty good overall...I'll need to check and see if they're still up and running and if so head back for a visit soon myself.

August moon has been in and out of business a few times over the years. They baren't answering the phone today, so they may well be closed at this point.

Funny this subject came up, b/c I was about to ask the same question after an amazing 25 course meal at Djago in Amsterdam a few weeks ago. Like an idiot, I forgot to bring my camera to the meal, but if you are in the area, I highly recommend it.

Okay, Rijstafel, and good Dutch Beer.

A Portugese feast with some good Vinho Verde.

Chicago is a good place to many cuisines, but these are sadly missing.

To be fair, I have never had a good rijstafel in the US, period.

Yes -- I read this post with a combination of pleasure and envy back when it first appeared. It sounded wonderful.

I've actually enjoyed Indonesian food in several places -- Amsterdam, Sydney (lots of good Indonesian places there), and in Indonesia itself (though Bali, not the top of the Indonesian culinary hierarchy, but you could certainly get the good stuff there).

So maybe we can call the consulates of these places and recommend that their governments support restaurant projects in Chicago, to build good will and encourage tourism.

That's why most links lead to Amsterdam. I doubt there is any place in the United States where you can get a good rice table.

The last time i was in Amsterdam i had an amazing Indonesian/Dutch meal called Rijstaffel. It was a fixed price dinner that consisted of MANY small appetizer sized plates that pretty much covered the entire table. Anyone know of a Chicagoland restaurant that offers it?

Little Amsterdam, a diner in Des Plaines, is supposed to have a buffet with typical risjtaffel dishes every other Saturday (but I strongly recommend calling because the dates sometimes change). I haven't tried it myself, but if you do, be sure to post and let us know how it is.

While the company was great at our Saturday dinner at Little Amsterdam, it was the only redeeming value of the meal.
