Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Chicago, at 1017 N. La Salle Boulevard (celebrating 115 years as the city's oldest such church), is, this weekend, holding its annual Taste of Greece on La Salle Street in the next-door church parking lot.

I was in my office in the West Loop working until just after 4 p.m. and missed the Devon-a-thon . . . so I decided to get my ethnic food fix for the day (if you don't count my stopping at Tamales los mejores de Guerrero on the way to work at 8 a.m this morning) by walking over to Annunciation on the way home tonight (you know, the direct route - West Loop to West Ridge!).

The event today started just after 4 p.m., and when I arrive at about 4:45 things were still being set-up and only a couple of dozen people were in attendance.

There's a limited menu of food items, but sufficient to have a "taste" of Greece: Souvlakia, Grecian Chicken, Loukaniko (Greek sausage), Gyros and Spanakopita. It had been a long time since I'd eaten the sausages - Loukaniko's - so that's the entree I chose. Two grilled sausages were accompanied by a helping of Greek rice, a slice of cucumber and wedge of tomato, a small piece of cheese and a few olives - and a bread roll.

I'm embarrassed to admit that I didn't ask which meat(s) was used to make the sausage, but the taste was excellent, flavorful and well-spiced. Pork and beef, or pork and lamb . . . I'm not certain.

A small group of musicians entertained the folks who’d assembled. The size of the group of people increased during the one-hour time period I was there and I sense it’s a well attended event..

A glass of wine accompanied my meal and I sampled the Baklava for dessert. Both were enjoyable.

"Taste of Greece on La Salle Street" continues for the rest of this evening (Saturday) until 11 p.m. and tomorrow (Sunday) from Noon to 11 p.m.
