Over the weekend, 7-Eleven Inc. turned a dozen stores into Kwik-E-Marts, the fictional convenience stores of "The Simpsons" fame, in the latest example of marketers making life imitate art.

Those stores and most of the 6,000-plus other 7-Elevens in North America will sell items that until now existed only on television: Buzz Cola, KrustyO's cereal and Squishees, the slushy drink knockoff of Slurpees.

It's all part of a campaign to hype next month's opening of "The Simpsons Movie," the big-screen debut for the long-running television cartoon, which loves to lampoon 7-Eleven as a store that sells all kinds of unhealthy snacks and is run by a man with a thick Indian accent.

For 20th Century Fox Film Corp. and Homer's creators at Gracie Films, the stunt is a cheap way to call attention to their movie, since 7-Eleven is bearing all the costs, which executives of the retail chain put at somewhere in the single millions.

At 7-Eleven, they're hoping it shows the ubiquitous chain has a trait seen in few corporations -- the ability to laugh at themselves.

The report goes on to say that one Chicago store got the complete 7-11 to Kwik-E-Mart take over. Where is it?

That is one of the most dismal 7-Elevens there is. I wonder if Bobby "Snake" Jailbird will rob the place?

This morning's Trib confirmed it's on 63rd, but all 7-11's will have Simpsons-themed merch, including Squishies, pink-frosted donuts, Krusty-O's, and Issue 711 of Radioactive Man.

It's doubtful there's two in Chicago, since there's only a handful in the whole country.

Hmm, seems we lost the photos in the link above. Here's a Flickr set, also from Burbank:

I'm totally buying some Buzz cola. Now if only there were a place selling Slurm...

Looks like Sundaysous is absolutely right: http://www.7-eleven.com/kem_chi.asp

It looks like they've rebranded products at some other locations as well, since you can get a squishee at the 711 near my office.

Haven't tasted it yet, its chillin' in the icebox. Of course the second ingredient if HFCS. Made by 7-Up. I should have picked up the cereal, too.

Sometimes, a can or two shows up on ebay. I'd love to have one.

The difference here is that all the Quick-E-Mart brands they are selling are fully licensed, so there is really nothing stopping them from creating and selling Duff...except that the movie is rated PG-13 and they didn't want to introduce alcohol into the promotion.

Stopped by today after the Perogi Fest for a Squishy. :) 3/4 coke and 1/4 cherry.

What a circus! People posing their kids and themselves with the cutouts. Everyone had a camera.

Walking thru the parking lot there were some thirtysomethings in their cars noshing on donuts with pink frosting and sprinkles.

    What a day!
