BF and I stumbled on this restaurant, the Rice Box, while we were hungrily meandering about. This is definitely a place I will frequent in the future!

The menu is simple - about 30 items - all $6.95. All meals (except for 3) are served in bento boxes, complete with a green salad and japanese ginger dressing, rice, cucumber salad, gyoza and creamy mashed potato. All the accompaniments to the meal can vary but each section of the bento box is filled. Oh - and miso soup is included!

BF had the yaki soba (japanese pan-fried noodles), served mild... but still had a little too much heat for him. I had the kalbi (marinated short tibs). We liked the ease of ordering at the counter and having it brought to the table. The place was clean and spacious.

We recommend this place for anyone in the area looking for a meal neatly packaged with a very reasonable price.

There are also lunch specials for $5.45 for 9 specific items from 11am - 3pm.

Two days ago, Rice Box put up paper on their door and window. It's still up today. Does anyone know why they're closed and whether it's a temporary or permanent thing?

Where am I going to get my $7 bento lunches?

There are several Rice Box locations in the Loop and one in the food court at H-Mart. take your pick.

Sorry...I should have been more specific. The vacant-looking Rice Box to which I was referring is at Broadway and Wellington (in my neighborhood).

I wasn't aware there were multiple locations, and it's certainly good to know that. Thanks.

I hope it's not permanently closed. I love that place. I've always been surprised there aren't more people there when I've gone.

Really? Where in the Loop are they? My google search only turned up the Lakeview location.

IIRC, there's one on Van Buren and one on Wabash. I don't have the addresses handy, but both were semi-regular stops for me when my office was in the West loop.

The one on Wabash is quite reliable, though it gets very busy at lunch time as not a few other people have learned it makes for a great lunch stop!

I walked by this morning hoping for a sign in the window saying they were relocating or remodeling, but there was nothing but papered over windows. I guess it's gone for good.
