Speaking of tacky 70's wines (the White Zin thread), there's a nice article about Lambruscos in the NYTimes...

"Riunite on ice, Riunite so nice, Riunite, Riunite!"

Apparently the "good" Lambruscos are hard to find, some are available in NY. Any idea where they might be available here?

NY Times Article wrote:Millions of cases of Riunite lambrusco were sold annually in the United States in the 1970s. This fizzy, semisweet confection was aimed at sugar-craving Americans reared on soda pop, and it foreshadowed the wine-cooler craze that took hold a few years later. Even today a few million bottles of Riunite and other brands like Giacobazzi find their way down American gullets.

Maybe this answered my White Zin question. A lot of people don't want wine. They wants alcoholized soda pop. :)

Here's the ad and jingle for Riunite that I remember from my youth...

Apparently Riunite's unique flavor profile goes especially good with junk food: Hamburger+fries, fried chicken, pizza, etc... You may want to serve it in a giant BEER MUG for those special occasions!

    Emdub,

Sorry, a little late to the party, but Sam's carries a couple of delicious *real* lambruscos by Cantine Ceci. The Luna is my favorite, and will disabuse you of any memories of Riunite. It can be an acquired taste - sweet, but earthy and bitter too. And IMHO, it's a Fall wine that is best drunk with a platter of cured meats...

I have to second the recommendation for the Cantine Ceci lambrusco. I had some this past weekend and it was very good. Nicely refreshing, dry, etc etc. Maybe not the best value at $12/bottle, but I didn't pay for it so that wasn't a concern for me!
