musk melons

I have only recently discovered locally grown musk melons, which are so delicious right now! They are much tastier and more fragrant than typical supermarket cantaloupe. And they are significantly larger and cheaper!

Are these locally grown musk melons different from a cantaloupe? Is a cantaloupe one type of musk melon or are the two more or less synonymous? (Please excuse my limited knowledge.)

What are some other good melons this summer?

I heard once that unless you live in some far away place you probably have never had a real canteloupe, but that most melons sold in the US are jsut variations of musk melons.

Not sure if it's true.

Alton Brown says the same thing so it must be true I saw real cataloupe in Stockholm. It was similar ... but different.

here's a photo. the rind is defintely smoother.

I've enjoyed local muskmelons for many years and find that they are cheaper and tastier than most of the cantaloupes offered (which also usually seem to come from out-of-state). When they are in season during a good year, I have bought huge sugar sweet muskmelons for a buck apiece at Janssen's Fruit Market in Hobart, IN, if you're in the hood and the mood.
