I just found out that I'll be in Lorain Ohio, this weekend. I know there are a lot of old immigrants from the slavic world and a new group of immigrants from Puerto Rico. Any suggestions?

You're about 25 miles east of Cleveland and two of my favorite places. First up is Sokolowski's University Inn, a Polish cafeteria seving great comfort food for lunch during the week and dinner on Friday and Saturday nights only. Fantastic old world, dark wood dining room, the bar area has a big picture window looking out on the Cuyahoga and the Cleveland skyline. If you're into "industrial" this is a view to kill for.

The other place is called Phnom Penh, a tiny little dive with a selection of Vietnamese, Cambodian, and Thai foods. Great prices, huge portions and dang good food!

I'm posting this from a community computer in the lobby of my hotel in Grand Rapids so I don't have all my resouces with me. I'll try to get more complete info from the internet and edit it in later.

    EDIT: How's this for service:

As for Phnom Penh they actually have two locations. The Lorain Avenue outpost is further west and closer to Elyria. That one is the dive. The 25th Street spot is fairly new, more upscale and in the rekindled Market Square neighborhood, not far from Sokolowski's. Same menu, maybe higher prices, not sure. I've been to both and prefer the Lorain Ave, store, but then I like dives. Take your pick.

I worked six years in Elyria and there was little to recommend in Elyria or Lorain. We used to take our clients to Mountain Jack's near Midway Mall.

The Phnom Penh Restaurant on Lorain Ave. is not close to Elyria/Lorain; it is about 20 miles EAST of Lorain.

Personally, the best places in that direction are in the college town of Oberlin (10 miles west) or I would do as the prior poster suggested head into Rocky River, Lakewood, or Cleveland where there are a numbr of options.

Any specific food that you are looking for?

If Puerto Rican is what you are looking for, try

    Lozada's Restaurant
    1909 W 25TH St
    Cleveland, OH

which is adjacent to the West Side Market.

I didn't say it was "close" to Elyria, just "closer" than the 25th Street location.

Either way though, you are right, very little to recommend in Elyria or Lorain. Cleveland holds much better prospects.
