Mom’s Bake Shoppe & Restaurant

I usually don’t post about places I haven’t been, and although I technically have been to Mom’s, it was just today and only to pick up a menu. I did notice some interesting items, such as the dinuguan (“Filipino chocolate sauce and pork tidbits”) and a whole menu section devoted to merienda, something like afternoon tea snack foods including goto, which is tripe with rice and ginger, and tofu chicken and rice gumbo. There’s a huge menu of baked stuff I don’t believe I’ve ever had before, including bibingka, lengua de gato and many, many other exotically named and (to me) entirely unknown items.

I have a developing theory that all Filipino food is comfort food, and so a place called Mom’s fits that half-baked notion just fine. This was, however, the darkest bakery I’ve ever been in, though the vibe was decidedly friendly, I’d be interested to know if anyone here has been there recently...and what you had.

Never eat at a place called Mom's -- Sage Trucker Advice

This is a Filippino bakery, though I have been recommended only to go to the bakery. I have been in there a few times for bakery items, though so long ago I cannot begin to comment.

Long ago at a dinner at Spoon Thai, maybe the Western-athon?, someone predelivered treats from Mom's that were pretty good. They didn't attend themselves, just delivered the treats.

I've had Mom's $4.95 buffet, though it's been quite a while, at least 3-years, I remember finding the scant offerings tasty. I mention scant as, and once again this was 3-4 years ago, only rice, lumpia, roast chicken, a vegetable and soup were on offer. Frankly, I prefer the minimalist approach to buffets rather than the sea of trough food offered at most, but I'm not much of a buffet guy.

I also remember being somewhat indifferent to the baked goods I've had from Mom's, but, as I mentioned, it's been a while.
