I've been on a mini quest for FRESH halvah...fresh being the keyword. You know with the oil slick still on it and moist? I have purchased a few brands at Lincolnwood Produce (a store that Evil Ronnie and I frequent thanks to Steve Z) however, they have stale halvah. I purchased some this evening at New York Bagel and Bialy which is cut and wrapped...not bad, not great. So far, the Marketplace on Oakton has the freshest. I'd like to know if there are other recommendations maybe in the city (or not) that I am missing.

    Suggestions?

Fresh, oily 10# cakes of marbled halvah with whole nuts, are usually available to be cut to order at Kaufman's on Dempster.

Well, did you like what I recently served you? If so, it's from the Onion Roll in Oak Park.

Haven't looked for it there in a while, but I am virtually certain they always have a few varieties of fresh (homemade?) at the Middle East Bakery.

This is perhaps not a useful suggestion....

Morgan and York in Ann Arbor, Michigan sells the best fresh halvah I've ever had. (They also have an incredible wine, cheese, and deli meat selection).

If you happen to be in the area, skip Zingerman's and go here. They also ship.

    LD,

I bought a piece of halvah at Market Place on Oakton earlier in the week and it was very fresh. So much so I had to have a serious talk with it for pinching my wife's tush.

    Enjoy,

I saw what looked to be some very fresh halvah at Whole Foods on Peterson today. It reminded me of the stuff we used to get from Leo's deli in Highland Park... lo many years ago. Now I wish I'd bought some. :(

My husband stopped in Oak Park on Friday and picked up a nice chunk of halvah from the Onion Roll. It's really, really good -- perhaps the best I've had in a long time, or at least since eating with VI and family. We are still cutting little chunks off of it every time we pass it on the kitchen counter.
