I've been to Central Grocery and have been underwhelmed. Alonti's version of a muffaleta is quite good. If you insist on making your own, Whole Foods Lakeview sells a version of olive salad that is excellent.

Does Three Floyd's have booth seating? I'd like to take my mother who is 77 and has a bad back so we're all about sitting in a booth or at least in a padded chair that gives some back support--the standard restaurant wooden chair is usually a problem for her. Also, is there a separate restaurant section or is it part of the bar area? Thank you very much.

I'm addicted to a jar of Spicy Olive Muffaleta (spicy olive salad) that is sold at Whole Foods under the brand name "That Pickle Guy". Disclaimer - I have no affiliation with the company. I just love the stuff and put it on all my sandwiches.

...just an update to this thread. CPK ASAP appears to no longer have it. I went to the CPK ASAP last week in search of the muffaleta and it was nowhere to be found on their menu :( ...

    Andy,

After a successful early season outing with my, ok yours, soft shell crab recipe I was reading the above recipe with the thought of making it in the next few weeks. Recipe calls for seasoning mix, though none given. Clues, hints, ideas.

    Thanks,

Tony’s Deli & Subs, in Edison Park, makes a terrific muffuletta. Very good round bread. Good balance of meats and cheese. Very tasty olive salad. Two sizes. Competitive pricing.

Buy the big one, so that you can put the leftovers in the toaster oven for a few minutes.

Starship in Forest Park has the muffaletta as its Monday special now through the fall (switches to bread bowls for Winter). I've had it a couple times before and it's decent, although, never having a "real" one before, I have nothing to compare it to.

Mariano's grocery store in Arlington Heights has them in their prepared food section. I enjoyed the one I bought, but it's been ten years since I had one in New Orleans (at Central Grocery), so I can't compare them.

Paul Fehribach at Big Jones told me he might be serving them at Big Jones. He says they never sell very well, but he likes them (and he uses Central Grocery bread that he ships in...and the bread may be the most challenging element to get right).

Tony's Italian Deli & Subs, in Edison Park, does a fine muffuletta in two sizes. The standard version is a real treat and they will customize it any way you wish. A few minutes in the toaster oven makes this a terrific sandwich for now and future meals, as it even freezes well.

Tony’s offers a broad list of hot and cold subs, as well as some very good prepared foods and salads. We always have a large container of their hot olives in the fridge and we make extensive use of their frozen pastas and sauces.

Vito and the family, including Nonna Pontarelli, are always gracious and helpful. Nice people. Good food. Good prices.

It’s a wonder that they don’t get more love on the forum.
