While I know sushi/sashimi grade is not a FDA approved term necessarily, you all know what I'm looking for.

I've recently got a tip from a coworker that Supreme Lobster is a good place to pick up sushi-grade fish. I plan to go out there next weekend to take a look and probably pick some up.

I'm heading out to Fishguy Market this weekend to check that place out as well.

Has anyone been to either of these places to try their fish sashimi style, and also, any key places people go for sushi grade fish outside of Mitsuwa and H-Mart? (H-mart's salmon tasted extremely fishy the last two times I purchased there).

    Thanks in advance!

If you are looking for cut sashimi, you can't find a better deal than Chicago Food Corp off I-90/I-94.

For $20! I have never finished a tray in one sitting (2 people), so I usually stirfry the leftovers with ginger the next day.

Not sure what reasons you would rather not go to Mitsuwa, but I have one specific suggestion, and one not so specific.

    Specific. Same area as Mitsuwa.
(With the temps in summer, no matter where I go for sashimi, I'd bring a small cooler with ice packs)
About 1/2 mile south of Mitsuwa, there's a strip mall on the E side of Arlington Heights Road, there is a Japanese market in there. Smaller than Mitsuwa. Less "Hustle and Bustle," but also a smaller selection of sashimi grade fish
    Tensuke Market
    3 S. Arlington Height Rd
    Elk Grove Village, IL 60007
    (847) 806-1200

    Not so specific:
I once heard that many of the sushi joints get their fish from the places on Lawrence around the 3000 west-ish area. I never got any names of actual retailers, but I did check out a few of them, and found nothing that trumped the freshness of Mitsuwa or Tensuke. As for your two places, I have not even been to the Supreme Lob store in Lombard, although I pass it frequently enough, and I have never bought sushi grade stuff from The Fish Guy.

I used to live a few blocks from chicago food corp on Kimball, but they didn't have much in the way of sashimi back then. There was also a place just a few blocks north of there under the bridge, and on the E side of Kimball (a Korean market IIRC) that I preferred for sashimi. I'm glad that CFC has more offerings now though - they never had anything like that pic when I used to go there.

It's kept in the "cooler" section; They typically have 2-3 packages at a time. You have to ask for it behind the glass. I would not eat it, although it looks like CrazyC's never had any ill-effects. I'm a big seafood aficionado/snob however...

Please understand that I am not, I repeat NOT making my father-in-law's asinine sushi joke when I ask: is that the strip mall with the bait and tackle shop in it? We sometimes go fishing at Busse Lake and end with lunch at Mitsuwa, but we usually start out at that strip mall. I know GWiv has mentioned this place favorably as well...

Not sure about a bait and tackle, but I am sure there is a huge bowling alley at the S end of this strip mall.

Thank you all for your response! It looks like I have few other places to test for some good sushi grade fish...

I checked out Fishguy market this weekend, and was fairly happy with what they had. Picked up some King Salmon for 18.99 a pound and Yellowtail for 14.99 a pound. Got two swordfish sandwiches freshly made on the spot for lunch, a small cup of ceviche, and happily went home to prepare some sushi rice. Finished playing the evening out by throwing the salmon skin on a frying pan with some oil for a fairly tasty snack!

Salmon: Fairly good quality, would rank 7.5/10 compared to the freshest salmon I've ever had.

Yellowtail: Fairly good quality as well. I'd rank it 8/10 compared to the freshest.

It's worth a trip for sure! The next weekend will be Supreme Lobster, and possibly a trip to Chicago Foods to look for that package sashimi to test. I'll try to look for the place around Mitsuwa next time I'm in the area. Burhops will be for the next month it seems.
