NYC Upper West Side Tomorrow

I'm doing a quick trip to New York for a wedding. Although I'll be there with a friend (and am looking forward to a real black and white cookie) and we'll have a car, we're going to try to connect for supper with the mother-of-the-bride, who will be staying on the upper west side and observing the sabbath. Since sunset is late, we're inclined to find some place we can go with her within a mile or two of her hotel (she's a serious walker, so two miles isn't out of the question). Her hotel is at 2528 Broadway.

All parties are reasonably adventurous and appreciative eaters, and although the MOB won't eat pork or shellfish, she won't be offended if we do.

Any fun suggestions?

Okay, responding to my own post, I'm leaning toward Turkuaz. Anyone want to steer me otherwise?

I don't think you'll go wrong with Turkuaz. I couldn't afford to eat out very much when I was a graduate student in NY and so don't actually know very much about dining out in NY, but I had dinner at Turkuaz when a friend's parents were visiting. We had a very satisfying meal. I think I had the shrimp casserole...

For your black and white cookie, I highly recommend the one at Rocco's on Bleecker Street in the West Village. It's worth the subway ride to West 4th.

The UWS wasn't one of my major stomping grounds during my years in New York. I know that it will conflict with your friend's diet as far as dinner is concerned. But, if you get a chance, Miss Mamie's Spoonbread ion 110th is one of the city's best soul food joints.

hey ann, you have to try out cafe mozart on b'way and 70th st. (i think its on 70th). if you're heading south on b'way it will be on your left on the corner. fantastic deserts, great atmosphere, nice live music and i love the variety of coffees, cappuccinos and french presses they have there. i promise you won't regret going there. i know of other great places throughout the city but that one is the closest to you that i recommend. f.y.i. it is only about 2-3 blocks south of the all famous "grays papaya". the original hot dog stand that practically defines new york. if you happen to see it i don't expect you will have their hotdogs but be sure to grab a papaya drink there. they have fresh papayas delivered to them daily and the drinks taste similar to an orange julius except with papayas, obviously. i would love to know if you check either one of these places out while your there. if so, enjoy.

well i don't have any great recommendations for dinner, but you should hit up Zabar's beforehand... the best gourmet store, ever. it can't be missed. and not far from where you're going, around 80th and broadway
