Hello, just got a call from a friend who is driving from Iowa through Midway to drop her son and then heading up to Canada. They will be arriving near 4 p.m. today, want to stay near the highway for simplicity sake.

Anything that's easy, and not a chain, between 80 and the airportr along 55? Appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!

My favorite place near the airport is Chuck's Southern Comfort Cafe whch is three miles south of the Midway Airport.

To get there frm the airport, head south on Cicero and take a right on W. 79th St.

In LaGrange, LaGrance Road exit from I-55, I really like:

    Bella Bacino's of LaGrange
    36 S. La Grange Rd.
    La Grange
    708-352-8882

for American food with an Italian flavoring. Their grilled calamari is sublime.

Given the timing, though, I would be reluctant to venture too far from the airport, for fear of getting caught in rush-hour traffic while you're trying to make a flight. Instead, I would grab some double-crust "stuffed" pizza at Giordano's at the airport, so you don't have to worry about making a flight. You can order the pizza ahead so you don't have to wait 30-45 minutes for it to bake. Giordano's is located at 63rd and Cicero, at the southwest corner of the airport and just a half mile south of the terminal building.

Well thank you both for the recs (I'm totally jonesing for chicken fried steak now  ), my friend decided to hit Cheddar's  at the Bolingbrook exit. She'd been to one in FL and liked it, said this one was very different.

IMO, not really worth the 2 hours of driving, but I got to see an old pal and so the food was secondary (and I don't say that very often)  .

The closing of Szalas has left a gaping hole in our post-flight Midway plans. Anything new and noteworthy in the area? We will be heading north on Cicero and would prefer not to divert south or west.

You've done La Chaparrita? Not new to me, but still as noteworthy as when I first went.
We cannot be friends if you do not know the difference between Mayo and Miracle Whip.
