Dinicos Pizza in Berwyn

For those of you that have gone there, what do you think about the pizza? Personally I love it. The slices are huge, and the crust is perfect. If you ever safe the pizza and put it in you fridge, then microwave it, it seems to taste better. Very cool.

Never been. Please do tell WHY you love it. I might be in the market for a pie in the next few days, and my old standby Michael Anthony's has disappointed me for the last time. Can you compare Dinico's to say - Villa Nova, Al's or Michael Anthony's , Falco's, Chubby's, Home Run Inn, or Anthony's perhaps?

I gave them a try a few years ago. Not bad! A typical slice pizza joint ala Bacci Pizza. Thickish crust, minimum ingredients, lightly cooked.

Not what I prefer but my kids love it.

Not only was the pizza pretty good they have (had? I think they changed their cheese lately) awesome 'Pizza Puff' (as listed on the menu) aka deep fried Panzarotti. Big, beautiful (with a nicely fried crust) and not too expensive.

I'd say it is better than Homerun Inn and Salernos (which you didn't mention). I haven't tried the other ones.

Home Run Inn and Salerno's on Grove have a special place in the hearts of most people in the area.

Salerno's on Grove (formerly on 16th) makes a really good pizza (for it's style) and the service, interior and full menu makes it a nice place for a family meal.

How does Salerno's on Roosevelt compare to the Grove location?

Home Run Inn is an institution with it's thin crust pizza and on different visits I have had mixed results ranging from absolutely great pie to so-so with little 'frozen pizza style nuggets' of sausage. Last visit was pretty good.

Something about the pizza at DiNico's that the kids really like though. What makes it special for you?

A little off topic, but I though one of you Berwynites (Berwynians?) could answer a question. What the heck is Gravy Bread? Most of the the pizza places in the area offer it for $1 or $1.25. Is it just what it sounds like it is?

I don't live in the area, but yes. It is what it sounds like. A chunk of Gonella dipped in Italian Beef gravy. Sort of a "Wish Sandwich" for Italian Beef lovers.

Gravy bread is also sold on Maxwell Street. It became popular during the Depression; as stevez said, it's just French bread dipped in Italian Beef juice.

I tasted it again today and could not detect any spice; the very bland cheese was piled on quite heavily; the crust was dry and seemed prepared offsite (though I’d have to confirm that).

I think Gravy Beard sat next to me the last time I took the train.
