Baccala's Closing

It's true, many may have seen it on their radar, but this weekend is the last for the offshoot of timo, and all its pork filled goodness. And no I will not be working there this weekend, so this is not a shill, but rather a suggestion to go get a pork belly with smoked gouda risotto tonight or tomorrow before they are gone. I truly enjoyed the food there, it made serving it to everyone very honest and easy. Although things were inconsistant in the foh at the end, I think that losing Scylla and Baccala is a terrific blow to a neighborhood whose food options are mediocre at best. I feel bad being the bearer of bad news, but it is better than letting it go without it's goodbye's.

Sad news. Proof that subtlety don't live in this neighborhood. When I was there last (on a Thursday), there were only two other tables occupied, while a few doors down, People tapas was packed. Baccala, is quiet, civilized and serious, while People (although I haven't tried its food), is flashy, communal and more "fun." It's a partial lesson as to what is now working in this neighborhood.

I went there for my birthday dinner on the premise of house-cured lardo. It wasn't the lardo di colonnata of my dreams, but I geez, how can I not like a place that served up two different off-menu preparations of lardo love?

Plus the lamb tongue and pork belly...

Seemed inevitable. I never posted, but I had a terrific and remarkably cheap business meal there about one month ago. Tried everything on the menu -- which is pretty short, but has something for everyone despite the "adventure" stuff. Nothing missing in terms of food or wine then. However, we were mystified by the emptiness of such a good place with low prices on a Saturday night on busting Milwaukee. That particular corner might not be ready for pork belly, lamb tongue and no chocatinis.

The thing is, the meals all seemed very heavy for summer. We definitely would have been back, but not so much until it got cold.

I suspect menu selections such as those may very well be at issue. Very unfortunate.

An update on Baccala-- they haven't closed yet.

My husband read online that they were open through this Saturday, September 1. He called last night to make a reservation for tonight and asked if Saturday was the last night they would be open. Hubby was told by the woman on the phone that, "He hadn't decided yet."

My hopes aren't high to have as wonderful a meal as was had in April, but my fingers are crossed.
