Someone once mentioned having a Johnnie's Beef with "hot oil", What exactly is this? It sounds good.

I've searched all over the archives and can't find an answer.

They were probably referring to giardinara, which is made in an oil base.

"Hot oil" usually to me means giardiniera, but the oil part only. "you want sweet or hot?" "hot, oil only"

That would be Mr. Hammond. You couldn't find the posts because they were on CH, pre-LTH.

IIRC, part of his enthusiam was due to the fact that he didn't have to pay extra for the giardinara  .

    Hi,

Does anyone have a picture of Johnnie's beef sandwich? I have found only one but at a distance. I do have their bunch tamales and pepper & egg sandwiches, but a nice picture of the Italian Beef sandwich I cannot find.

(if you do have one, is it ok for use for WTTW public television this evening?)

The silly thing I was at Johnnies not so long ago. I didn't bother taking a picture because I assumed there are lots here. If I am wrong, then show me the link!

    Thanks!

    Regards,

I must ashamedly admit that I like catchup on a combo. I would never put ketchup on a beef sandwich or any other type of hot dog or sausage sandwich. Does this make me a heathen?

    Hi,

You're all lifesavers! I have to admit Ramon I was stopped dead in my tracks when I saw the ketchup on the combo. I had found the other beef picture, but I wasn't sure 100% it was Johnnies.

Now I can offer them choices.

    Thanks!

I've seen ketchup on eggs. I've seen ketchup on a hotdog. I've seen ketchup on Chicken Fried Rice (once but the consumer does it all the time). But, never in all my life have I seen ketchup on a combo.

I stopped by for a bag of combo's last week and the woman ahead of me ordered hers with 'Hot Oil'. I watched intently as to what this might be and they went to the giardiniera jar and spooned out just a few spoonfuls of just the oil pushing the giardiniera aside.

I did get mine with the giardiniera and Yowsa! That was spicy! :) Maybe next time is is just 'hot oil' for me too.

As to this thread, I remember visiting with Hat Hammond, and having him order the hot oil, after it was first brought up on that evil old board. For what ever reason, the whole process, from David near wispering the request, to the way they filled it without blinking, struck me as incredibly funny. Maybe for a future Gorilla Gourmet?

Anyways, as to the above, I'm in the catsup is gross unless you cannot see it school (i.e., fine on burgers, although I can manage with fries), but nothing took the cake more than what I saw the other day on Alton Brown's Feasting on Asphalt. They got themselves aboard a Mississippi tug for a day or so and got to see them eat. For breakfast, the Captain takes the homemade biscuits and gravy and then douses them, envelops them like a high-tech fire extinguisher, with catsup. Gross, gross, gross, gross, gross, gross, gross, gross.

Interesting that they'll strain the oil for you- I always just order "sweet on top, hot on the side", it comes in the little cup and I use the lid to hold back the solid and drizzle the oil on top. I feel bad about tossing the solid part, so it's good to know I can have them do it and not waste anything.

Ketchup on a beef or combo? I wouldn't do it, but I think we all have something we feel guilty about putting ketchup on. For me, it's mac & cheese, but only the blue box stuff, not real mac & cheese.

You know, this talk about ketsup on a beef got me to thinking and it takes the standard beef sandwich and starts it moving along the scale towards BBQ beef. Somewheres inbetween,

Now if I am at home I have been known to enjoy a boiled hot dog with ketsup on a piece of plain white bread. Something about the ketsup and the bread.

Actually when I was a kid I had a friend that would enjoy a ketcup sandwich.

Heathenistic as it is I might, just out of curiousity, give it a try! :)

    :)

Yup. With the pizza I was able to see the peppers and was able to meter the heat.

With the giardiniera it was all over and was in every bite. The heat just grew and grew.

Today I unfortunately had to attend a funeral at St. Vincent Ferrer Church in River Forest. When I walked out the front door of the church and looked across North Avenue I saw Johnnie's smiling back at me. At that moment I realized that North Ave was the boundary line between River Forest and the Village of Elmwood Park. I looked at my watch and it was 10:50 am. At that moment I imagined myslef first in line at Johnnie's when they unlocked the doors at 11:00. So I turned a negative into a positive. Combo, hot, dipped. Rinse and repeat. While the sandwich(es) were fabulous as always i detected that they were a little bit smalled then usual. Has anyone else noticed this? I mean at $3.82 a pop I'm not really complaining, just curious.

BTW in the hopes of avoiding the construction on both 294 and/or the Edens I took River Road north as a side street route home. Where I had my second bout of serendipity of the day, Gene & Jude's. I must be sending out good vibes. Anyway, if anyone out there is listening I would like to request all future funerals be held at St. Vincent Ferrer so I can hit both Johnnie's and Gene & Jude's on my way home to ease my grief.
