peppermint ice cream

hi: it's my mother in law's birthday on Monday and she wants peppermint ice cream. anyone know where to score some this non-holiday time of year? I know Swiss Gourmet used to make it year-round but I don't know where to find even that. Thanks in advance!

I've bought Swiss Gourmet at Jewel "off season".

Oberweis has it now. I don't know if the shops have it yet, you would have to call, but I can get it for home delivery. If you don't know anyone who can order it for you, I suppose I could if you can't find another source.

It might be worth a call to The Chocolate Shoppein Edgebrook. They sometimes have it. Also, Margie's usually has it on the menu.

My favorite version. . .is to make my own. Mmmmm. We bought a small ice cream maker a couple years ago. It allows us to make just a quart at a time - perfect for a small group. It's so good fresh.

But, it's also a bit of work and you have to have the maker first! Good luck - hope you find it.

It probably won't help you, but Mitchell's in Homewood has a luscious peppermint.

Homer's carries a flavor called "Peppermint Stick". I've never had it, so it might have bits of peppermint candy in it.

I called Margie's before I even posted and they said flat out "No!" (as if, oddly, they never carry it). I will call Oberweis tomorrow, I could swing by the Wicker Park store if need be and if they don't have it, I will call Homer's. My MIL says she actually prefers the kind with bits of candy in it, so that would be a big hit.

I do have a new-to-me electric ice cream maker. I had heavenly homemade peach sorbet at a party in July and the man who made the sorbet told me it was a breeze to make in his electric ice cream maker and he told me quite emphatically that I should not buy one new because you can always, always find them at the thrift stores for about $3. And sure enough, the following week I bought one at the Brown Elephant on Clark for $3 that had never even been taken out of the internal wrapping. Now I just need to break it in. But not just yet, and not with peppermint, I think I will start with something more seasonal or basic, like peach or vanilla.

I'd like to second the vote for Homer's in Wilmette. Since Peacock's closed, it's the best icecream on the North Shore.

Peppermint ice cream is pretty basic, by the way: just take a vanilla recipe and substitute peppermint extract for the vanilla extract. You could smash some starlight mints if you wanted hard candy, but I prefer crumbling oreos in mine.

That it's basic doesn't make it any more seasonal... but if it's her birthday, that's seasonal, isn't it?

I'm pretty sure they carry Peppermint at Sweet Occasions and More on Clark in Andersonville because I've been tempted to get it. I usually end up with the Cinnamon though -- because i just love me some Cinnamon ice cream.

As a long time fan of peppermint ice cream, I third the suggestion for Homer's. It's not the pepto pink I grew up loving, but rather swirled with pink and better than what I used to get.

Plus, from the other flavors others with me have tried, every flavor is good. Their coffee ice cream almost made me doubt my loyalty to my favorite.

I was just at the ice cream shop next to Apart Pizza on Montrose just west of Lincoln.

They serve Sherman's ice cream and they had a peppermint flavor available.

Re Oberweis's peppermint: A place to get Oberweis ice cream, other than an Oberweis store, is Strack and Von Til.

thanks everyone for the help. We were coming back from Racine on Sunday and so we stopped at Homer's in Wilmette. They couldn't have been any nicer. I mentioned that we needed to get the ice cream back to Chicago and so the woman went and packed it all up in dry ice free of charge. I purchased a pint of peppermint stick, a pint of chocolate and a half gallon of vanilla. My MIL was so thrilled that I scored some peppermint ice cream (and that it was from a family-owned business) she tucked into it while we were still gnoshing on chicken and brats. She was smitten. I tried the chocolate and it was nice and creamy. The little ones were thrilled with the vanilla.

I can't wait to go back to Homer's when we're not rushed for time. I would have never known about it without the board, so thanks a bunch.

I was at Tate's in Wheaton on Sunday night. I know this is late...but they did have pepermint. I personally opted for raspberry chunk...yummy.
