The LSC dinner was a hit, for me anyway (mmmm, salt and pepper ribs) - particularly all the new and charming LTH'ers who I hardly got to meet and speak with. So let's do another.

630pm, Masala Yangu 43 E. Jefferson Avenue, Naperville on Thursday September 6. Here is more info on the restaurant.

This one will be a little different, since Masala Yangu and its menu are a bit smaller. So I will get together a rough number of attendees (guessing 10-15 for now) and arrange a special, family-style meal probably with some number of off-menu items.

Who's in? I will talk with the restaurant to get started on planning with a rough price and a preliminary menu next week.

The suggestion at my end of the table for another dinner was Cebu, which I am always happy to do. Maybe for October?

    HI,

FYI - In October I have the author(s) of Philippine Kitchen coming to Chicago to speak for Chicago Foodways Roundtable. We are planning to have a lunch or dinner either October 13th or 14th at Cebu. Maybe this could be a combined effort?

Sounds good - I am happy to join and I am sure others westerners will also come along.

I believe I am not away on the 6th as I fly to Pittsburgh to watch the Cubs-Pirates series the next day. So put me down as a yes for now, and I'll know for sure a week before.

Does anybody know if Metra has day parking at the downtown Naperville station? While I usually drive downtown to work from Darien, I might drive over to Naperville in the morning and take Metra downtown so as to improve my chances of actually being there at 6:30pm.

I will be out of the country on Sept. 6. I did take a peak at the menu for this place though and I will definitely be trying it sometime soon. I had no idea they were there. Hopefully, I can join you next time!

Mark me down for one. I'm about to become embroiled in a few major projects at work, but they should be wrapped up by that time. As long as I'm in town, I'll fit it in.

Have fun and hopefully hubby and I can join you in October.

Not expensive. As I recall, main courses were right around $10. This meal will cost more than LSC, but I am hoping we can keep it around $20pp total.

I hope to sneak out there for lunch tomorrow and discuss the dinner with them - both menu and prices.

So far looks like we have:

    dickson + 1
    threadkiller
    glennpan + 1
    wak
    flip + 1
    dodger
    sweet willie

My guess is we can comfortably go up to 15, but will check that too and post in a couple of days. So menu, price, max group and byo info coming up soon.

Tease - finally heard back from M Y - dinner is confirmed for the 6th with a price of $25 pp, before tax and tip I suppose. My reply was to ask them to assure there will be some unique dishes in there, rather than negotiating the price down. Hope that still works for everyone.

Should be able to share a menu in the next day or so.

The People's Republic of Oak Park is the western suburb closest to Chicago, but it's still a Western Suburb, so I guess The Wife and I qualify for admission to this event. Please put us down for two.

Being a fan of creadillas, I'm especially interested in the "Turkey balls simmered in tomato curry sauce."

I had hoped to attend, but, unfortunately, will not be able to make it due to a conflicting work-related committment. I know I speak for everyone when I say that I appreciate Dicksond's taking the time to set this dinner up. I hope to be able to join the West suburban LTH'ers for a future event.

The menu has landed and it looks delightful.

    mchuzi ya samaki (fish stew)
    githeri (corn and bean medley)
mchuzi ya nguju ( peanut sauce)
    nyama choma (charbroiled lambchops)
    sukuma ( sauteed kale)
    paya (cow's hoof soup)
mchuzi ya kababu (turkey 'balls' - spiced ground turkey balled up and simmered in tomatoes, onions garlic)
bamia na nyama ya mbuzi (stewed okra with goat meat)
muhogo ya naazi( cassava simmered in coconut milk)
matoke (stewed green bananas with lamb)
ugali ya mahindi ( corn meal )
    ugali ya muhogo (cassava meal)

viyazi thamu (sweet potatoes reduced in cardamom, cinnamon and sweetened milk)
kaimati (deep fried glazed donut -type holes).

With the addition of the two Hammonds from the foreign land of OP, but we are accepting their visas) we are at 12 (see above for my list). Can easily handle 15, so there is room for a few more.

Please let me know if your plans change. Also, if anyone wants to bring wine or beer that would be okay. I will probably bring a couple of bottles of wine.

revised to add desserts and turkey balls

Well, going from 12 people to 5 presents a bit of a problem, so I am going to try to recruit some more people. If any of you have someone you would like to bring along...

I told the restaurant we would have 9 yesterday, and I would love to be close to that.

It chaffs my butt when people (like me, or, more particularly, The Wife) cancels at the last minute. So, I am offering a

    FREE DINNER!!

at Masala Yangu to any LTHer who signs up now. If you're already committed to going, see you there; if you haven't committed yet and want to eat on me (not literally; this isn't Kizoku Sushi), just act now! I will cover your portion of this dickson-engineered dinner.

Offer limited to one -- and only one who hasn't signed up yet. Tonight only.

Please help an LTHer redress his karmic debt.

Dave, Dave, I wasn't planning on going so I will take you up on this  .

Okay, to avoid confusion that was a joke. Plus if you take him up on it you can join in to hear him explain that karmic debt. That should be worth the (free) price of dinner anyway.
