I don't know that I'll be able to make this, but I thought LTHrs might be interested:
A buffalo meat buffet and Native crafts for kids will be among the highlights of the Buffalo Roast and Family Fest on Sunday, Sept. 30, 2007, 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Mitchell Museum of the American Indian, 3001 Central St. (at Central Park Avenue) in northwest Evanston. Visitors can dine on buffalo in the form of grilled burgers and sausages, along with other Native-inspired foods including rice and corn dishes and a berry dessert.
At 3 p.m., guest presenters will demonstrate a skill known as flint-knapping — the ancient art of shaping flint into sharp-edged cutting tools and hunting implements. They will also display and discuss stone artifacts and pottery remnants representing different eras of Native American life in the Chicago area dating back thousands of years. The items were found in area forest preserves and at other local sites. At Native craft workshops, children can learn to make finger weavings, dream catchers, and “god’s eyes.” Raffle prizes will include books on Native American subjects.
Admission to the event, including the buffet, is $25 for adults, $10 for children ages 12 and under. Pre-paid advance reservations are advised. A form can be downloaded from the museum’s Web site.
