Hi.. first time posting here, but I've poked around the site for some time.

I don't know if it's been mentioned already, but Scylla in Bucktown will be closing 8/26/07.. the owner/chef wants more time to travel. Also, Bonsoiree on Armitage near California is no longer serving lunch or weekend brunch.. which I'm more than a little heartbroken about. Apparently it wasn't generating enough of a profit to be worthwhile. But they are open Sundays for dinner now, which is good.

Also, I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the "sushi cafe" that will be opening on California a little north of Armitage in Logan Square.. I live near there, and the "Sushi Cafe Coming Soon" signs just went up a few days ago. I'm a loyal Hachi's Kitchen customer, but then again, this place would be closer to my apartment.

The hotdogs I saw looked like proper Chicago dogs with tomato slices and glow-in-the dark relish. Obviously, the staff had cooked this kind of food before. And as a plus, they give you packets of Red-Gold catsup for the fries. Tomorrow, I might investigate the Char Polish.
Well, I stopped back into El Gyro Sabroso today, after bragging up their fries for a week. Today, I got a Gyro and fries. The Gyro was actually very good, but the fries were absolutely disgusting. Instead of the toasty brown fresh-cut gems I received on their opening day, today I got half-cooked gummy tasteless frozen garbage. Talk about going from one extreme to the other. Anyhow, I just wanted to nullify my previous praise for the fries at El Gyro Sabroso. Like I said, the Gyro was pretty good, probably better than the alternatives in the immediate area, but those oily limp sticks of potato mush really put me off.

    "Coming soon"

Habibi, at the corner of Magnolia and Devon.

From the giant King Tut on the awning, presumably it will be Egyptian.

Last night SaintPizza and our kids and I had a celebratory dinner at Hyderabad House, which we had not visited in some time. While eating, we noticed an awning across Devon that also read Hyderabad House. We were told by the man working the counter that in 2 weeks they are opening a "Family Restaurant" across the street from the existing restaurant. The existing restaurant will still be there, we were told, but "just guys." I did not request further clarification of that point so I'm not sure exactly what he meant.

the concept? your dining experience is the making of a food show, where the restaurant patrons help them operate everything... i guess sort of like improv meets cooking meets eating?

Wow, this looks interesting ... any idea on the price point of this place?

This is the new location of Taqueria Mexico that used to be in a much smaller location directly across the street.
Another place called Sabor Michoacan is going into (what I believe was) the old Taqueria Mexico space on the east side of the block.

The southeast corner of armitage and leavitt has been papered over for awhile, bearing signage indicating "coming soon, Wicked Desserts Cafe". Hubby and I were beginning to think it was never going to happen til last night, walking by we noticed their actual signs seems to be in place and the paper on one window is down to reveal a full dessert case, counter, and several seating areas are all ready to go. A shiny new espresso machine sat on the counter as well. I'm estimating we're days rather than weeks away from an opening here...hoping it will be good but we shall see.

I walked by Pannenkoeken Cafe at Lawrence/Western tonight on the way home from work and saw people inside and a sign on the door indicating staff training, or some such thing. I knocked on the door and asked a woman who apparently was in charge when she expected the restaurant to open and she told me next Tuesday. She said what was preventing them from opening the doors for business was something that hadn't been installed/completed yet: the Muzak system. I was taken aback by the comment and asked if I understood what she said and she repeated the reason. If what the woman told me is accurate - how odd that is.

O'Fame Pizza seems to be opening a new one between Montrose and Irving on Western. As imports from Lincoln Park go, I guess that's pretty good.

I'm thrilled to hear that since that will be in my delivery area. I have not had their pizza in a long time, but when I used to live over by DePaul, their pan pizza was always one of my favorites. I could always count on them for a very good crust and fresh toppings.

I noted the following additions to the food scene when walking home - down Clark St., N. of Lunt - from the Rogers Park METRA station last Thursday night:

A restaurant purporting to provide food typical to the Mexican state of Michoacan

Yes, instead of Tacos al Pastor, this restaurant features Greek Gyros - eggs, too

Wolfgang Puck's in Evanston suddenly closed its doors this Sunday, citing high costs, and emptying a prime restaurant space next to the movie theater. I hope something much better will appear there.

(My only experience in this place was awful, but I suppose it's not fair to judge on a single experience.)

The other day, I passed by a new "Asian fusion bistro & bar" not far from home, Thalia. A woman (possibly an owner) was handing out takeout menus on the sidewalk. It looks to be one of the increasingly ubiquitous Thai-sushi places, with a menu that mostly covers Thai (and some other Asian) standards with a small selection of maki and sushi. It's at Chicago Ave. and Green St., in the former Kaleidescope space (there was some other restaurant there in the intervening period, but I forget what it was). Looks like they do lunch and dinner, plus brunch starting at 9:00 on Sundays. On the day I passed by Sunday, there were a number of people in there, so it appears to be open.

In Evanston: The storefront on the southeast corner of Central and Lincolnwood (across from Hartigan's Ice Cream) has large signs announcing: Taylor Street--Coming Soon to You!

Also in Evanston, Ninefish on Main St. received approval for a beer and wine license (per the Evanston Roundtable 9/19/07).

(This issue also carries a story on the Evanston city council debate over whether to allow a new pizza place in the same Main Street Marketplace as Ninefish--Sarpino's Pizzeria--to stay open until 3 am.... I'm sure the good ladies of the WCTU are spinning in their graves over the goings-on in their Evanston!)
